The Power of God's Word

We have the word of God with us at all times. The Bible. Scripture. How amazing! How wonderful! We can read it anytime. We can meditate on it any hour. In doing so strengthens us. Builds us up in our relationship with the Almighty God. It reminds us of who we are in Christ Jesus. Helps us live the Christian life. Enables us to live an abundant life in a sinful world. Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Paul tell the young minister Timothy in his second letter to him in chapter 3:16 "All Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

As I was in the hospital and going through physical therapy I would think and meditate on a passage of scripture to get me through. As I lay in ICU I prayed the passage. As I was going through physical therapy and took steps I would re sight it in my mind. It was also the first thing that I wrote down on a paper for occupational therapy. The passage was Philippians 4:13 "I can do everything through him who gives me strength."

What passage of scripture has gotten you through tough times? How have you seen it in your life? What is you favorite passage? Why?

What do you think?

Great post!

my fav verse is Isaiah 40:31

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mountup with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

and the reason I like it is,
when this world keeps knocking ya down, and ya want to give up, the words, are like a drink of water. If it ws not for His Strength, I wouldn't be here!

jel,
that has always been my favorite verse as well. It was one of the first verses that really spoke to me when I became a Christian.
Another one that has been my motto is, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15 I realized that even as a single college student, I was a house of one and that meant that I had to take a stand with my room mates against what I considered as not being God's will (drinking, cussing, other college age sins). As I was looking for a husband, I made sure this was his motto too. It was my right of passage into putting on a new wine skin. Now it serves as a foundation for everything my household does.

Isaiah 40:31 is a powerful verse that has been a stength to many people. I praise God that He gives us the strength that we need when we need it most.

Kathy,
Thank you for making such a great point with Joshua 24:15. We often see it as just families and forget that it can also apply to those who are single/in college and looking for a mate. Great point.

Right now in a time of spiritual uncertainity (or at least a quest for a group to worship with) I call out Matt 6:25- So I tell you don't worry about everyday life-whether you ave enough food, drink and clotes. Doesn't life consist of more than food and clothing?

djg,
You are so right. How much do we worry about that does not even happen. It is my goal in life right now to try to worry less and understand that my life is in the complete control of God. Great thoughts. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Especially during this time of year. London, etc.

John 21:25 - Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

People who think they know everything, think they have it all figured out, could learn so much from this one little verse. God's ways are not our ways. :) It gives me chills just to think of all the wonderful things that were written down...what wonderful things could have been left out!

Jennifer,
Yes, what an amazing passage. It gives me chills as well to think of all the miricles that Christ did that could not even be written down, what great things could have John left out. It does make you wonder. We can't wait for the 4th.

My favorite verse is Matthew 7:25
My father (a gospel preacher) died of ALS when I was 9. Mom had a lot of problems (she was diagnosed bipolar) while growing up. She died exactly ten years to the day of dad. Then raising five children (four teens) can be hectic as well. I always go back to that verse and know that no matters what comes my way, I can survive because my house is founded on the Rock. I don't understand how people living in houses built on sand get by day to day.

Thanks for this post.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled (or satisfied)." That verse is always encouraging. By the way, thanks for your comments on my blog. I appreciated it.

Paula,
Thank you for sharing your testamony with us all. People think courage think mystical power that some people have and some people don't. All it is doing what you have to do when you don't have a choice. Thanks for sharing how you have had that courage through Jesus being your rock in difficult times in your life and how that passage has helped you raise your siblings.

Terry,
May we all hunger and thirst more because of the promise of that follows, for they will be filled. I believe all Christians should have this passage should be preached, taught, prayed, strived for by Christians in our churches today. Imagaine what would happen if Christian did just that. Wow. Thanks for adding your thoughts and I really enjoy your blogs. Feel free to add to any discussion on my blog any time. God bless.

One of my favorite scriptures for years and years and years has been Romans 8:28:

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

It has uplifted me in times of great trial, including when my younger son was born prematurely and not expected to live or to be permanently brain damaged. He did live, he was fine and healthy afterward and is a wonderful Christian young man, husband and father today.

I also love Isaiah 40:31, too, though. It's a great one that has brought me much comfort, as well.

God bless . . . Dee

Kinny, I don't have one verse of the bible that I think more of than any other,But I have been in that shadow of death more times than I like to recall so I would have to say the verse that gave me comfort when most needed would have to be,
Psa 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Dee,
Romans 8:28 has been an encouragement for many Christians that have been going through difficult times. I know that has also helped me and my life as well. Know that God is good is going to work it out for good that I might be able to help someone, minister to someone who might have the same difficulty or use that difficulty to bring someone to God gives me hope.

I know you are busy and want to thank you for stoping by and adding to this discusison and sharing your thoughts with us. You are welcome any time. I pray that God will continue to bless you as you get settled in to your new place in life.

Laymond,
Great to read your words again. It has been a while. I am glad you stopped by and adding your passage. I know that those who have expereince near death experiences in life have found confort from the passage that you stated. Psalm 23:4. I know while I was in ICU I thought about that part of Psalm 23 especially verse 4. It is amazing that you pointed out that very verse. I too have found comfort from that passage when I found I didn't know if I was going to live or not. Thanks for sharing with us. God bless you brother.

I appreciate everyone sharing their favorite passages to this post and understanding that the Word of God still Has the Power to touch and change lives. May we never forget, especially during difficult times. May we as Christians understand that the Word of God, the Bible is the greatest book ever written because it is living, active, sharper than any double edged sword. It is inspired. God breathed. May we teach it to our Children. May we memorize it. Meditate upon it. May it be upon our hearts, and minds. May we use it when we are tempted. May we us it to teach others. May it be our guide in life and into the life eternal.
