notes
"They Smell Like Sheep Vol. 2" by Dr. Lynn Anderson
Published by Howard Publishing
Again I believe this book would be a great investment for any church, minister, elder to buy. I am sure you can get it again at Abilene Educational Supply, Sunset Book Store, Howard Publishing at http://www.howardpublshing.com/
I will have more post on this book later on.
Have any of you read this book? What did you think? Did you think it good as the first? Why or why not? How can it be a tool for the elders across the country? If you are an elder and have read this book already how has it impacted you as an individual and the congregation where you are at right now? Do you plan on put this book on your reading list? Again, as I mentioned earlier there will be more post on this book and the role of elders later on. I am excited about this book and hope you are as you and your congregation is as well. (Other great books by Dr. Lynn Anderson include: "The Shepherd Song", "Navegating The Winds of Change", "Heaven Came Down", "If I Believe Why Do I Have These Doubts?" "In Search of Wonder").
Just one of the rich quotes by Dr Anderson found in the book on page 9 is:
"A spiritual leader is the kind of God-hungry people want to be like."
What do you think?

Loved the book. Thank you for reminding us of it, though. We just installed two new elders yesterday. It would be a great gift.

Peace
Neva

Good book. I was able to hear him discuss elders in detail locally. Being outside of the CoC it is a very CoC centric book.

That is not good or bad but just an addition to the discussion.

Neva,
Yes. I believe that his first book has chnaged elder for CEO's to the way elder's should function. This book gets to the heart of elder to minister to the people. I think it would be a great gift for the two new elders who were just installed at your church.

Josh, I know this book is going to be a great read and a discussion.

Beverly,
Yes there has been many opinions of all kinds about elders in the Church and Dr. Lynn Anderson gets right to the point about how they really should function. I appreciate you stopping by my blog and sharing with us. I pray that God will continue to open your heart and bless your life and relationship with Him.

Beth,
Thanks for stopping by my blog and sharing. You are welcome anytime to add to the discussions going on. God bless you as well.

Darin,
I appreciate your review. I think it is going to help and know that it is just an addition to the central discussion. I hope it will be a book that helps elders understand the "heart of their role".

I have not read the book but have experience with several elders.

Most of the time when "Elder" comes to mind a word that comes to mind is "control". Elders traditionally want to be in "control" of the sheep. Control is one of the main objections to small groups for instance.

It was Jesus himself who first used the picture of sheep and a shepherd to describe our relationship to him then later the apostles used that same picture to describe believers and leadership.

Sheep are pretty passive animals. They do not need much control. They do need protection from preditors, the need guiding to fertile feeding grounds and to water. Control is not even in the picture.

A good shepherd loves the sheep enough to die for them. That shepherd puts control at the bottom of his list of duties.

At WFR we are blessed to have elders who do not "lord" over us but rather love us and nurture us. Of course they will admonish with plain words when called for. But there is no doubt that our elders deeply love the sheep.

Grace to you,
Royce Ogle

Royce,
It is my prayer and I know the Lord's desire that they never "lord" over the flock but love and care for it as He does.
Thanks for adding you thoughts to this discussion.
