Preachers & Rock Stars
Last night we were flipping through the channels and landed on the "Wedding Singer" and watched it for a few minutes. It was at the part where Adam Sandler was singing "Love Stinks," and my middle son asked my wife, "Why do preachers yell?" My wife, said, that he wasn't a preacher. He then asked, "Why do rock stars yell?".
It is funny what little kids pick up on. Do we really yell?

There are two types of preachers. (those who divide people into two groups, and those who don't...?) Or, those who yell and those who don't. Passion or logic. I get the impression Paul was a logical style preacher and Apollos was more on the passion end of the scale. Nothing wrong with either style IMO. But the fiery preachers still need to have a logical biblical message, and the logical guys still need to show their conviction.
You know I don't consider myself yelling when my wife stops me and says, "You're yelling."
This happens mostly when I'm talking about something that I'm passionate about. Maybe this is what happens with some preachers. On the other hand, I wonder if some preachers just yell to get their message across clearer.
Women are more sensitive to volume changes (actually their five senses are better attuned to the world than men's) so they notice the smallest of changes and it sounds like yelling or raising your voice to them.
I have a tendency to become quite animated (depending on the text and my mood) and can raise my volume on occasion. Previous congregation I was actually asked to lower my voice. This congregation seems to enjoy my voice set free. I try not to be continually loud but the layout of our auditorium allows me to emphasize certain phrases when I need to without feeling that I'm bringing the roof down. Hopefully they will continue to enjoy my animated style.

I preach with passion and occasionally raise my voice when I get into it. :-)
I think that is funny----especially because of the emotion Sandler put into his "yelling"----all that angst.

Kids pick up on and comment on things that adults often miss. Or, could it be that we've just become desensitized to many things?
Well, I used to really hoot and holler. Nowadays, I raise my voice far less frequently. But, I still do. I don't think about it much, though. I just pray that God will get ahold of my heart and help me speak in such a way as to effectively communicate His message.
