Christianity and The Environment
We read in Genesis that God created the heavens and the earth. Over and over again God said, "It is good." It was created for us for our good. The questions I have are: Should Christians be concerned about taking care of the earth. Should we be concerned about the environment? Why? Or Why not? Should the church stress that Christians should take care for the earth that God has created? What can we do take better care of the earth that God has created? For those who believe in the renewed earth how does taking care of the environment now play a role? Do we fail to see the importance of taking care of the environment becuase of our view of heaven and the earth a temporary place?

I think it's very important. It's just a good general rule to be a good steward with anything you've been given.
Good post, like the subject matter.
I think we need to take care of the earth, not specifically because it was made to be good for us, as you say, but more to the point because it was made to glorify God. We were made as the crowning acheivement, and to reflect God's image onto the creation so that the creation finds its proper order -it helps earth reflect God's glory.
I think this stuff is right at the core of our reason for being. So, yes, it is very important.
Adios & Shalom...
Adam & Eve were told to take care of the plants & animals around them. I don't think we should let animals or the earth take priority over humans, but as Velvet Cowboy said, it is a good thing to be good stewards of what we've been given.
I have been challenged by this alot in the class i am taking.
it seems that sin affected the environmnent as well, and the environmnent is also awaiting redemption. Romans 8
stuff to think about. It seems that since ecological concern has become associated more with one political party, and the other political party seems to coincide with some major moral issues, we have decided that concern for the Earth is only for "tree-huggers" and not for Christians.
i think christians, who believe in a Creator God, should be leading the way in ecological concern, but sadly we aren't.
I only recycle because it's the law...

Adam and Eve were stewards of the Garden. Noah and his family were stewards of the Ark. We are stewards of all of God's creation: humans, animals, plants, etc.
I cannot understand the "God wants us to rape the earth" ideology that some conservative Christians cling to.
With you preacherman.
Christ is the answer to the longing of the environmentalist heart. If we are to reflect Christ we must reflect a concern for all of creation.
I am not one who thinks we- that is mankind- hold the key to what happens to our earth. Our God is soveriegn and is in control of his creation.
Having said that, I do feel that as Christians we should respect this creation enough to be responisble and not wasteful.
I love the way Danny answered the question. He doesn't believe we are in a position to harm the earth as much as some would have us believe. However, we should be good stewards of the creation we enjoy.
The earth has proven to be very resilient. We have more forests in the U.S. now than in 1900 according to a report I read last week.
Remember about 30 years ago when all the scare was about over population, even in the U.S.? Recently on a cross country flight from my window seat I could see that even in 2006 overpopulation is hardly a problem.
The earth will continue much as it is until after the judgment when it will be purged by fire and a new heaven and a new earth will be presented by the Creator and it will be eternal.
The biggest reason I have not bought on to the global warming idea is that Al Gore says it is so. I have not been able to catch that guy telling the truth about anything very often. I say that as a joke, but I am not in the least concerned about global warming.
What I find in the Bible leads me to believe that the power of Christ will have to dissipate for His creation to go haywire.

for those who say no harm can come to what God has made need to take a few things in to account.God is not willing that any soul should be lost, but they will.
I know 2:Pt:3:10 said the world and it's works will be burned up, but does it say God will burn it.
Gal:2:18: For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
Yes I think man has a calling to care for what God gave him.
His soul and his earth.
This world is my home, and I am not JUST passing thru.
God destroyed the earth once already. That did not mean that it ceased to be. It was a cleansing destruction. A purfication fire is coming. But that does not mean that I am not supposed to be the creature God made me to be.
He made me to be an image bearer and a cultivator. A steward. By bearing his image, Godly order is called forth to creation.
Look at Isaiah 40 when the image bearer comes the mountains bow down, the valleys stand up and the crooked places straighten out for him. Creation does this at the sight of His image.
I am (we are) to bear his image. The creation was designed to respond to his image in me (us) this way too. But it is for his glory. And when we bear his image and bring him this kind of glory out of creation, we will experience our purpose for being here.
We are to live as such in this age as we anticipate the age to come. Why would you hate your home? the home God gave you. His gift. We are to love and care for it. Even now. It is what we were made for. We are not supposed to pretend otherwise in the meantime. That is escapist religion. We are Kingdom Come anouncers, living in that kingdom now until it comes in its fullness. Otherwise you are heading in the wrong direction.
Many blessings...
I think my hair just might be a danger to the environment.
