Physical Health or Spiritual Health

Do people focus on physical health more than spiritual health? Why? or Why not? If our soul lives for eternity why aren't more people concerned about the spiritual? Asking more questions? Seeking answers? Why aren't churches full if people aren't concerned about the after-life? What do you think, should we be reminding the world that their is a hell? If so, how should it be done? Should we more focused on the spiritual and see people as souls? Should study and preach more about the supernatural (spiritual warfare, angels, demons, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit).

What do you think?

i find that when i tend to focus more on my physical health is usually when i am not feeling well.
i believe in the spiritulal world but only have been actually looking into it more as i have been paying more attention to God...which came about because of two trips into the pit of darkness of anxiety and depression..of which i am now on medication and in transition this month of changing to another. so the last two years i have been searching and asking questions and having a more personal relationship with my God instead of ignoring Him.

i honestly think that we should be spendin more time in the presence of God and asking these questions about what we should be doing.

i think that we should believe more ourselves enough to say things as they come up every day to who we are to say them to. Not to be afraid of what they might think but concerned that we do not speak when the Spirit leads.

I think that we should see the wounded part in every person and have compassion.

i think that our main focus should not be on people at all, and that our main focus should be on what God wants to do through us. I think that we should be very focused on the spiritual for we belong to the body of Christ. We are born again, and that means to see things in a new way...as a child of God. I think it is good to see people in a spiritual light and that we are all souls living in bodies, souls that are either belonging to God or lost to evil.

I do not think that it is inappropriate to study about spiritual matters. I think that actually it is necessary to think about how to focus on God and why it is so important. Why the basic things slip through our fingers and we wonder why we feel far away from God and wonder why we lost our zeal for God and wonder why we do not grow and know what God wants for us.

it takes constant focus on God and his Kingdom and His good gifts.
it talkes prayer and praise and questions to God and time meeting Him is his word and allowing the Holy spirit to work in us.

if we as believers do not get a hold of how improtant the basics are to constantly do, then there will be no building upon that.

Just look at the list of prayer requests at the typical congregation, and I think you'll see what we tend to focus on.

Grace and peace,
Tim

Nancy,
Wow. Great points. I appreciate you adding to this discussion. I totally agree with your statements on how we should be spending more time in the presence of GOd and asking these questions about what we should be doing. I also think you are right on the money in trying to see the wounds in every person and having compassion. Many Christian are quick to judge and criticize. Excellent responses.

Tim,
You are so right. The prayer list at our church is shrinking because God has heard our prayers of those who were sick and has been doing healing in peoples lives. We should share more spiritual matters on the prayer list. I think it should be that way in all Churches. I appreciate you for pointing that out. I hope that in the future Christians will be more open to sharing the spiritual problems they face and allow God to work in their lives through the power of prayer and ministry of the Church.
God bless you brother.

In the KJV Paul said in 1Timothy 4:8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. I have heard that years ago a preacher used to say "Paul says 'bodily exercise profiteth little' so you need to do a lot of it." :-)

Focusing on anything other than the here-and-now physical realm takes a lot of faith and courage. While we know the importance of anchoring our thoughts on things above, it's not always easy to put into practice.

A few decades ago the subject of hell was many preachers pet topic, but over the years it has lost favor, and seldom mentioned...in my neck of the woods anyhow!

Kinny if you were to preach a sermon on the merits of hell what would you say and where in the bible would you go to confirm what you say.

Larry,
You are so right in your comments. I agree. Getting our mind to think spiritual it tough. Preaching hell every week isn't what people need. Eph. 6:10-ff does tell us that are at war spiritually so we must equip people for the fight even though we know who wins in the end. So, I ask these question in order for us to get us to start thinking more about the spiritual relm. Understanding it. Knowining His Word more. Know Him deeper. The Holy Spirit's Gifts practices in christians.

Laymond,
I would start with Jesus story about rich man and Lazzorus. I would talk about Jesus telling of the comming judgement how God will seperate the sheep and goats. I would preach on Revelation 20:11-15. Revelation 22:15.

there some that care about their, physical health , but there are just as any that don't, these days people don't think about anything, but what makes them feel good at the time. they don't think about the here after, when you die,you die and don't feel or know anything, so why worry!

as for preaching about it, if a preacher were to start to preach today like they did back when they were preaching FIRE AND BRIMSTOME ! Someone would pitch a fit and try to stop them, saying that they are takling this to serious and to light up a bit!

Jel,
I totally understand where you are comming from and dont think we should preach FIRE AND BRIMSTONE SERMONS every week. Do we need to remind people of the after-life? Do we remind approach talking about heaven and hell in the pulpit with the attitude of Christ? How would he approach the subject? Carefully, Lovingly, Mercifully, Graciously. Jel, thanks for you comments. I greatly appreciate them and don't worry we wan't going that direction.

We maintain lots of things in our lives ... our cars, our homes, our bodies, and our minds, just to name a few. If we don't maintain those things they quit working or quit growing.

So, here are a few thing I think are important to help us maintain our spiritual lives as Christian individuals...

* Bible Study - daily reading from God's word. It teaches us love.

* Prayer - daily communication with God. It teaches us dependancy.

* Accountability - through a support group or Christian friend.

* Church - one of the main ways God strengthens and builds us up.
I don't know about you, but my tank gets empty really quick. I need refilled or "maintained" on a regular basis. Our goal as a church is to lead one another hand in hand towards the ultimate prize ... heaven.

BUT, out of the four things mentioned, we tend to overlook accountability more than the others. Why is that?

Trey, at least part of the reason for the loss of accountability is endemic to the Reformation itself. The Catholic Church held sway over people because it made everyone accountable to the Catholic Church though the system of sacraments and confession. Protestant churches "individualized" Christianity and the Christian life. We were all individually accountable to God. We are all responsible for our lives individually. I think that Protestants (and we in the churches of Christ) go overboard in avoiding anything that might look like practices of the Catholic Church. So we avoid anything that would hold us accountable to one another. This isn't the only reason but I think it is a main reason.
