Veggie Tales on NBC
I wasn't going to post a new post for another few days but I felt like I had to this morning after my sons watched Veggie Tales on NBC. I couldn't believe it. They cut out the beginning and end of Veggie Tales, and edited references of God, the scriptures and ending of Veggie Tales ended with "Thank you for stopping by our house" instead of "God made you special and he love you very much, bye." I don't understand why this keeps happening to Christains when 75% of the country identifies themselves as Christians! They don't want to offend the athiests or other relgious groups then do what they tell us, ..."Don't watch it." I am just tired of networks doing this to Christians, not caring if the censor , edit, change our message and offend us.
What do you think? Why does the world not care if they offend us? Should we be more vocal about being offended when the do try censor and change our message? How does it make you feel as a Chrisitan when people don't mind offending you when it comes to your faith for the sake of not offending someone elses faith?
What do you think? Share your thoughts.

Be sure and check out Ben Witherington's post on this very matter. His blog address is http://benwitherington.blogspot.com
Scroll all the way down to the September archives. Ben's September 23 post is called "Madonna Crucified: Veggie Tales Maimed." It's a great post about NBC's double standard.
I don't know how to provide a direct link here, but our discussion can be more informed if we all read this first.
Yep, the networks have sanitized the Veggies. The secularists are relentless in their goal of removing God from our American culture.
A few of my grand kids have their pictures in one of the latest Veggie Tales books published by Howard Books here in West Monroe.
As a lady recently said to me, "I have read the Bible right over to maps and we win".
Grace and Peace,
Royce Ogle
Thanks for your comments Wade, I did stop by and read Ben's blog thanks.
Royce, thanks for stopping by and adding your thoughts on the matter. I just think it is crazy. I am sure they hate it when or if they were censored for something they were trying to say...It is just sickening.
Thanks guys.
I know I posted this post out of shock and frustratoin over what my kids saw this morning and the in your face censorship of God but I would love for anyone to continue to comment on other posts as well and add to any discussion on this blog. Thanks again for everyone's comments.
Mt:10:22: And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
It's not like we were not warned is it?
L.E.,
You are so right.
The Bible does warn us and tells that we can expect it. Thank you for the scripture reference too. God bless you brother!
And thank you for your comments.
I commented on the veggie show out of pure ignorance about what people were talking about. I watched some of it this sunday and come to this conclusion. I don't know that God wants his name associated with talking and humanized vegetables other than he made then to be eaten by people. are the children who watch this show(wnich eveidently originated in Japan where they worship a different god) will they grow up to be totaly carniverous in order not to eat their buddies. I was taught veggies are good for you, it is hard enough to get kids to eat veggies, much less their friends. Ha :) I hope this is taken in jest as it was meant.
L.E.,
I did have my kids saying when the first started watching Veggie Tales, I don't want to eat Bob the Tomatoe or Larry the Cucumber. :-)
All joking aside. It is a wonderful way for kids to learn about God and it is also very entertianig to adults too. 0r is it just me? :-)
Thanks for you comments as always.
I'm not sure it is NBC's responsibility to promote Christ and I'm not sure I want them to take it on. Maybe I'm wrong on this one.
Darin,
If NBC didn't want Veggie Tales then they didn't have to put it on their saturday morning slots. From what I understand is the dirctors let them show veggie tales with the understanding that nothing would be censored. Should they censor Christ, sripture, God out of the show? To edit out God made you special and he loves you very much was edited out so it wouldn't offend pro-choice women and viewers. So what is NBC promoting? In its shows: homosexuality, strippers, profanity, pro-choice, adultery, and on and on. Does NBC censor anyone else because we might be offened? That is my point? Do they really care about offending Christians? No.
Darin, Thanks for your comments as always. I appreciate you adding to the discussion.
From what I know about the entertainment business, which might fill a baby-sized thimble, there must be two sides to this story.
If the directors and developers of VeggieTales had sold the rights for their intellectual property to NBC with a 'non-censorship' clause, then they would be sueing the pants off of the network.
Also, NBC didn't just squiggle together some lines and colors in order to run the "Thanks for coming by our house" ending. That seems to be vintage VeggieTales animation, and that suggests to me that NBC said, "Take out the Christianity or we're not buying it..." and the developers took the cash. But I could honestly be mistaken. I hope more information does surface about this situation.
in HIS love,
Nick
The creator of the Veggies had to sell them a couple of years ago. I believe the agreement is with the company that now owns the rights to the vegetables.
I understand the frustration I just don't know why it would surprise anyone. If NBC started promoting Christianity I might think something was wrong with Christianity.
Darin,
If that is the case, the directors and producers of Veggie Tales should be ashamed of themselves for allowing NBC to edit. I appreciate your comments on this discussion. I too, hope more comes out on what really went on.
Like some of the previous posters, I'm pretty sure the guys at Big Idea are getting some sort of financial profit from NBC airing "VeggieTales," right?
Plus, let's say someone outside the Christian faith sees the show, likes it, and then buys one of the VeggieTales DVDs and learns something about God. Can't all be bad, right?

Erik,
You make a great point.
Thanks for letting us see that great benifit of others watch, buy the dvd's and learn about God. Never thought about it that way.
Thanks.
Around a month ago, I was flipping through the channels to see if we could let the children watch anything on Saturday. Then, I saw and heard our friends from Big Idea. I checked again, sure enough they were on NBC! Wow, I said this is neat. At commercial time, I noticed that they were using several of the BI family of programs sandwiched with some other "kid-friendly" shows (many involving dragons).
Then I discovered the controversy--they're taking God out. At one point NBC was reported as removing the "four-letter word, 'God'" from the shows. Phil Vischer is quoted as not realizing until the project was too far advanced that in his role helping to make the shows NBC-ready, that he would have to remove references to God. (There's an example of one of the news articles here: http://www.dailynews.com/ci_4382465 .)
It also dawned on me that perhaps NBC is not so courageous as CBS was over a decade ago when they began airing the Angelolatry series which tagged each episode (for almost 10 years) with "God loves you, (Honey), and wants you to know it." While Touched by an Angel enjoyed its share of controversy for mentioning God, the network never pulled the line. I guess that it's okay to talk about angels (to the point of worship) and even let them mention God--but not animated vegetables.
I'm curious to know how they are removing the Bible references in 3-2-1 Penguins and keeping the integrity of the lesson in each episode. I do think that part of the creators' hopes of jumping from video-only to national exposure on network TV is being realized here. I also know that the values taught by Bob and Larry are ones that I'd be glad for my children and the children of our community to learn. After all they are "Sunday Morning Values, Saturday Morning Fun!"
Ben,
Thanks for you comments and adding to the discussion you bring out some very intersting information.
Thank you.
The thing is that the other 25% of North Americans... they matter.
NBC isn't a religious channel, people watch it expecting equality, and if they get catchy religious songs pouring into their children's ears, brainwashing them against the family religion then you get a lot of angry people.
The modern thinking person of today believes that children should be raised knowing how to think, not what to think.
While 75% of North Americans may well consider themselves 'Christian', most of them only say that because they don't want the hassle of explaining that they haven't thought about it at all and don't want to be viewed as atheists which are blackened in North American society, especially by Christians. Those people will say they're Christian but they likely haven't had many/any church visits, never read a bible, disregard rules of Christianity and break them too.
It's like a form of bullying among adults, 'If you're not in support of this you're a loser and I'm gonna tell everyone'.
I do think that NBC are a bit silly for even bothering with Veggietales as a Christianity-orientated show, perhaps they acquired it hastily then realised it needed censoring after they'd already bought the license.
In any case, the 'Just don't watch it' rule is a bit ignorant, you can't expect parents to be on top of all the tv programming and get on with their busy lives too. I'm sure you'd be angry if 'Satan-worshipping Hour' was on tv and your kids were watching it while you were busy in another room and you don't even realise that every morning they've been watching a show which places the devil in a good light and encourages you to worship the devil with catchy kids songs and silly characters that act out entertaining stories.
Let's say that's on every morning during your shower time and your kids have watched it every day for months before you find out, and your kids are now in full support of the devil and have come to believe that Jesus is evil and should be ignored and avoided. It's now your word against a long-running tv show with amazing characters, catchy songs and funny stories. Your kids will be very confused, and may accept your word as true, but the damage is done... those songs and stories are forever imprinted onto their minds, and they may even fear images of Jesus as those who would fear images of Satan, making it very unlikely that they will ever recognise themselves as Christians.
25% of North America is 78.5 million people. Those people, their opinions and their beliefs matter just as much as anyone else's. They deserve to be treated equally and with respect.
Also, if you want the uncensored versions, watch Christian channels or buy the DVDs.
There's no harm in a censored version, but there is much harm in an uncensored version. We all need to have respect for each other and not force our beliefs on other people.
