Sin

What is sin? Are we born sinners? If we aren't born sinners at what age do we become sinners? Are there big sins and little sins or is all sin equal? How do we know if we sin? Can people go a length of time without sinning at all? Do we sin everyday? How are we forgiven of our sins? Is there a process? If so, what is it?

Sin is rebellion against God or God's commands. I don't think we are born sinners. I think we at some point become sinners when we know what is right and down do it. Different ages for different people. I believe that in order to be forgiven of sin one must accept Jesus as Lord, repent, confess the sin before God.

Sin is "missing the mark". We all sin as none of us can attain the perfection of the two greatest commandments. We are born with a nature that ensures that we cannot be selfless. All sin is equal in that it separates us from God and all sin, no matter how dire it's consequence on earth (or not), if not repented of will lead to a greater propensity to sin habitually. Yes, we sin everyday. We can never go without sinning. We are forgiven of our sins by confession and being penitent. That does not mean that we need to confess every infraction or lack of ability to meet God's standard but that we need to walk in the light (1 John 1)

So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. -James 4:17

I would agree with what is above. Sin is rebellion against God and/or missing the mark. In regards to the "big" vs. "little", I would say there is no difference. Perhaps big vs. little is the wrong way to think about it. I do think there's a difference between willingly rebelling vs. sinning by ignorance.

I don't believe we're born sinners. However, eventually we reach a point in life when we have a responsibility for obedience (different Xs for different people). Our flesh won't allow us not to sin. Therefore, we sin everyday - in our actions, our thoughts, etc.

Forgiveness only comes through Christ Jesus (1 John 1:8-10). Confession, repentance, and striving for holiness are all essential.

I was always taught that we were born sinners. Sprinkling babies. After studying the Bible. I found that never in the New Testament are babies mentioned or included in those being saved. And after having a baby girl recently I noticed that there is no way on earth that this precious baby could be sinning. I think sin is willful disobedience to God. Something we choose that goes against his will. At some point we become sinners. Needing God's mercy and grace. We recieve forgivenss of sins when we confess and repent. It is all about the heart and attitude behind it. Ps. 51 is an great example.

Hey all,

I've been working through some of these questions for awhile on my blog, and I'll post links at the end if you want the long versions with scriptures, notes, etc, but here's the short version:

What is Sin? Paul said we wouldn't know what sin was without the law. Jesus said the law and prophets hang on two commandments: Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself. Thus sin is "not loving God with everything you've got and your neighbor as yourself." Jesus loved you enough to give everything so that you could know love and reciprocate, aka stop sinning.

Are there sins that are worse than others? Consider that the first sin, the one that brought death and hell into the world for every man, woman, and child since was eating a piece of fruit. Have you ever done worse?

Sin, as has been stated, is rebellion against God's will which separates us from God's glory resulting in spiritual death. the blood of Christ was shed by God as an act of mercy and grace to save us from that death and it is reached by the sinner when he turns from the willingness to sin because he understands who Jesus is and submits to Him in baptism. Several have said here that we are sinful by nature, or that we cannot overcome the power of the flesh to make us sin. I disagree. If i am sinful by nature then by nature I must sin all the time (by nature I breathe all the time, when I stop I die) . If I am sinful by nature then, it seems to me, that God has some responsibility as it is He who gave me that nature. Romans 10 indicates that I have the power to die to sin - to choose not to sin, to choose to have nothing to do with sin. How is that possible if it is my nature? With God's gracious help I can "die to sin," and therefore I don't think I sin every day, though it is certainly possible.
Sin is a 10,000+ year old subject and it took God 66 books to deal with it. I don't have (know) all the answers, and still have lots of questions, but these are just a few of my thoughts. Thanks for asking.
