Meeting Physical Needs

In the bad U.S. economy is your church doing anything to help the unemployed, the homeless or those in need? Does your Church see it as an opportunity? Have you or your Church seen an increase in those asking for assistance? Why do some churches refuse to help people in need? In what ways can we help those in need? Do you believe we are to help those in need? Why or why not? Are churches missing an opportunity to be Jesus to those struggling right now? What is your church doing? What can churches do? What can you personally do? Did Jesus take of the physical before he got to the spiritual? Did he feed, then teach? Did Jesus heal, then forgive? Is there anything we can learn from the way Jesus met the needs of others? If so, what is it? Have you been turned away or blessed by the church when in need? If so, how? How can the church be a blessing to others right now during this difficult time?

What do you think?

I think most churches are missing a huge opportunity to minister and be Jesus to others during this difficult time. We often tend to be self focused and neglect the poor.

I fear most churches in the US and in Canada would rather minister to their own members than the community, and in that they are missing opportunities to share Jesus with so many by showering them with love and grace. Blessings missed by looking inside a church door rather than outside it.

Our church has a ministry called "The Pantry." It is packed every Saturday morning. People are there to get food and clothing. The thing is... it's not homeless people. It's middle class Americans who have 2 kids but don't have jobs. Now they don't have any groceries in the cabinet. Horrible. The church does it best... much better than the government when the church works. But that's the question... will the church actually do the work?

Several different denominations in our community work together in a food pantry and also give guidance in helping people find work. It's called HAP (Huntsville Assistance Program)

Most churches are selfish. Self-focused.

Our church helps pay peoples bills. Electric, water, gas, and gives out food as well. It has been more middle class families that have been hurting and asking for assistance.

I'm grateful to serve at a church that is perceived as a giving church for the right reasons. Although we have provided for many throughout the year (and especially the kids at holidays), we've definitely seen an influx in those needing assistance. The greatest thing is being able to pray with those we help. What a blessing. And they realize someone is not just giving them a handout. We actually care!

The preoccupation with salaries, programs, brick and mortar leaves little left over for the poor in most churches.

We're having a huge Harvest of Talents in a couple weeks where we auction off items that we've donated to the church. All of the money goes to feed the hungry. Last year, we raised over $29,000.

But, agree that most churches are self-focused, which is why I have found such a home here.
