Justice..What does it mean?

What is justice? Is justice something that can really take place in the world? Why is there so much injustice in the world? Is and can justice be different in the eyes of people? Should we desire justice? What does it mean when people say, "God is just?" Is God just? What does that mean to you? If true justice is going to be given on the day of judgement as most Christians view how should that make those who have been treated injustly feel? Is true justice going to come on judgement day? What does that mean for us? Does God want us to strive to be just to other now? Is justice important now? Why or why not?

JUSTICE

I have given alot of thought to this question. In the wee hours of December 22, 1985, my mother died on a cold operating table surrounded by strangers. My great-grandmother had died instantly the night before, having lost her head. The man who did this to them served almost no jail time. I was unable to attend the double funeral on Christmas Eve as I was still unconcious in a children's hospital. So, I've given a quarter century worth of thought to this question. All I wanted was justice for my mother but, first, I had to figure out what that meant.
Once you get past the fear, anger, hatred and resentment, what is justice? So far, I've gotten to, "Justice is whatever is Just." I don't know very much about Timothy (a couple of arrests before and since) or what led him to drive his company truck, drunk, through a stop sign at a high rate of speed with cocaine behind the seat. Why was he self-medicating? Maybe, the arrests were cries for help that went unheard. I have no idea what is just in this situation. But I do know that, after the fear, anger, hatred and resentment, Love stands alone. Forgiveness, true forgiveness, took years. But in the end that was the only way for me, and I suspect my mother, to find true Peace.

I think a person's belief in God can dictate how they think about justice. Different holy books and religions have different sets of rules and standards. These standards are said to be given by God. People like me who are agnostic believe that it is truly impossible to know what God would want.

I rely on justice in the eyes of the law. Does it always feel like justice? Maybe not all of the time, but the real problem is that justice as punishment really doesn't take away the fact that a crime was committed in the first place. A murdered person will never come back; an assaulted person will never be the same again.

Sometimes I feel like justice is just another word for vengeance.

Sharon is right. Justice is whatever is just. Well defined.

Kenny I have heard people say, yes God is sometime harsh, but he is always just.
Let me ask the folks here a question, What did John the Baptist do to deserve the justice dealt him. (imprisoned, and beheaded)
Or for that matter what did Jesus do.(crusified on a cross)
I have always heard that justice is deserved.

Justice isn't a friend to any of us! If you think about it, justice consigns all of us to eternal damnation for all sin and come short of the glory of God. Was it just that Christ a sinless man suffered for our sins? Christ offers us mercy instead of justice. Me, a sinner has the opportunity for eternal life. Life isn't just and I am grateful.
