Christ Followers

I have noticed that many Christians are now calling themselves, "Christ followers". What does it mean to be a "Christ follower"? Do Christians today truly understand what it means to be a "Christ follower"? Have churches been good at making, "Christ followers"? Yes, no? Why or why not? What does a "Christ follower" look like? Is there a difference in commitment, life-style, practice, belief, than those who go to church every week and call themselves, "Christians? Are you a "Christ follower"?

What do you think?

I like Christ-follower better than Christian. The term "Christian" has been watered down in our Western culture to the point that anyone who even thinks Jesus was a good teacher can be in that camp, or anyone who was sprinkled as a baby, but does not live Christ-like through the week. "Christ-follower" denotes discipleship. It isn't just a name, but it implies action. You're not just identifying with a group, but following the Christ.

I fully agree with Wade Tannehill;
Every devil this day is calling himself a 'Christian', but a Christ follower is known by his deeds.

To become a Christian, all you have to do is to make a decision.
To be a follower of Christ, you must be born again.
Paul

Christian...especially evangelical has sadly become so politicized that it's sad. For that reason I refer to myself as a "believer".

Christian...especially evangelical has sadly become so politicized that it's meaningless in some ways. For that reason I refer to myself as a "believer".

"Christian" sets the bar too low. It's what people fill out on census forms. It doesn't denote a passion for following Jesus.

I resonate with what most have commented so far although I still use the term Christian to describe myself. The term "Christ follower" is equated by many with the people and the teachings of the emerging church movement. I guess almost any label can be misunderstood.

I agree. Christian is a label. Christ follower infers you are doing as Christ did. You are helping those in need. You are showing love to the unlovable. You are being Jesus with skin on to a lost world.

Perhaps the real question we should be asking ourselves is "Can a label contain me?"

I'm having a tough time refering to a pastor as a shepherd. In the Bible it says that "the Lord is my shepherd." It also shows where Jesus tells Peter to "feed MY sheep". I believe that pastors and shepherd are used interchangeably, but "shepherd" is a verb not a proper noun. Pastors should look after the sheep, but the sheep don't belong to him - therefore I see him as an "undershepherd." In earlier translations, shepherd is used more often than preacher or pastor or overseer. Any thoughts?
