Lets Talk About The Lord's Supper

As I sit in my favorite coffee house with my son Quinn, I am thankful for all that God has done and continues to do in my life. God is wonderful and it is great that we as believers are allowed to commune with Him.

As Jesus faces the worst possible death imaginable; he takes the time to have one last meal with His disciples. The meal is known as the Last Supper and the Lord's Supper (Matt. 26: 26-30, Mark 14: 22-30, Luke 22:7-22). It is at this last meal that he takes the time to tell them what the bread and wine symbolize. His blood and His body, broken for us.

One of my favorite parts of worshiping God is taking the Lord's Supper or "Communion with God." I take the bread and remember what Jesus Christ did for me. I remember His body broken on the cross. I think about His willingness to sacrifice all for me. I take the time and remember and cherish the cross.

As I drink the cup of the Lord, I remember the blood that flowed from his head, back, hands and feet- the blood that cleanses my sin and failures. It is the blood that allows me to have a relationship with the Almighty God.

The Lord's Supper reminds me that it is not of my own power that I am saved. I spend the time in thankfulness for that blood. It is my opinion that we should not just remember the death but the also the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He isn't dead, but alive.

I have been in many churches that felt like a funeral service of our Lord. We must as believers take the time and remember that He is not dead, but alive within us.

There are some churches that take the Lord's Supper daily as referred to in Acts. Others take the Lord's supper on Saturday and Sunday. There are some churches who take it once a month once a year and even weekly on Sundays. Does it matter when we take it?

Is it a salvation issue? Does taking the Lord's Supper every Sunday or how ever often make it an empty ritual? How can we make it meaningful?

The questions I want you to ponder and discuss are the following: When does your church take communion? Does it matter when we take the Lord's Supper? Do you think it has changed over the centuries? What does taking the Lord's Supper do for us as believers? What should our attitude be while taking it? What should we reflect on? Many mothers and fathers with young children have a hard time during communion concentrating on what is going on. Does God accept and understand us taking it? What does the Lord's Supper mean to you? What was the best experience you have had during the partaking?

What do you think?
Share your thoughts.

Wow! That's a lot of questions.

I noticed on my blog that I've got 40 posts tagged as "Lord's Supper." That's one out of every six.

I think the Lord's Supper has slipped drastically from what it originally was. I'm afraid we've made it too streamlined, too efficient. I also think we've focused too much on the "remember Jesus death" aspect and not enough on the community expression that it is.

If you haven't read it, I highly recommend John Mark Hick's Come To The Table.

Grace and peace,
Tim

First baptism, now this. There must be a shortage of open cans of worms!

Well, let me answer your questions from my personal Catholic point of view. I will avoid going deep into theology where I can.

When does your church take communion? - Mass is celebrated every day of the year except Good Friday (but there's a Communion service* offered on that day) and Holy Saturday (but the Easter Vigil Mass is celebrated in the evening), so you can technically receive Communion every single day in the Catholic Church. Some parishes celebrate Mass daily, but others don't (usually because of a shortage of priests).

(* A "Communion service" is usually a celebration involving the reading of Scripture, followed by the Lord's Prayer and the receiving of Holy Communion. It's not the same as a Mass because a Mass involves the consecration -- the "making" of the Eucharist -- whereas a Communion service depends upon the "left over" consecrated bread from a Mass.)

Does it matter when we take the Lord's Supper? - Seeing as how the early Church did celebrate the Lord's Supper daily -- when it could -- I would think it falls upon the community who decides NOT to do it daily to come up with a justification. I really can't understand why certain Christian communities do it only monthly or yearly or not at all.

Do you think it has changed over the centuries? - It certainly has. It used to be received by people standing up, and when they received the Eucharistic bread it was often placed in their hands (or on a cloth on their hands), and they drank from a single cup. Traditions diverged in the Eastern and Western Church.

I don't want to go into too much detail, but for several centuries, a Western Catholic layman would only receive Holy Communion on the tongue, while kneeling, under the form of bread alone. Most Eastern Catholics (and the Orthodox) have almost always received Communion standing up, under both forms (bread and wine) mixed together (called "intinction") and placed into their mouth with a special spoon.

(This might all sound comical but it is a truly mysterious, awesome, and reverent sight.)

What does taking the Lord's Supper do for us as believers? - I believe that receiving Holy Communion brings me into the life of the Trinity. It's an intimate communion with Jesus Christ: he abides in me and I in him. It gives me grace to avoid sin and grow in holiness.

What should our attitude be while taking it? - We should approach it with thanksgiving and joy and wonder. We should always be aware of our unworthiness to receive such a precious gift. We need to examine ourselves to see if we are prepared to receive it (cf. 1 Cor 11:27ff). In the Catholic Church, before we receive Communion, the congregation all says together words from Matthew 8: "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed." Not everyone has to receive Communion every time; one reason to abstain from receiving is if you are aware of having committed serious sin that you have not yet confessed and repented of.

What should we reflect on? - I think the "marriage supper of the Lamb" (Rev 19:7-9; cf. Rev 3:20--5:14) is a good thing to reflect on. The Catholic Church sees Holy Communion as participation in a spiritual and heavenly banquet, prepared by Christ for his Bride the Church. It is also important to reflect on the Passion of our Lord, out of which came the gift of the Eucharist.

What does the Lord's Supper mean to you? - As a Catholic, the Eucharist is the source and summit of my faith and my spiritual life. The Eucharist means everything to me.

What was the best experience you have had during the partaking? - It is particularly meaningful for me whenever I have had to abstain from receiving... the next time I do receive, it occurs to me what a gift it is. Also, a couple of years ago, I attended Mass daily during Lent, and it was spiritually fulfilling to receive Communion every day; it was a real source of spiritual sustenance.

When does your church take communion? Every Sunday, offered morning and evening.

Does it matter when we take the Lord's Supper? Yes. We shouldn't consume it when we're not willing to let it consume us.

Do you think it has changed over the centuries? Unquestionably yes. Essentially, no.

What does taking the Lord's Supper do for us as believers? It brings us to the same table where our Lord presides. It levels the playing field. It reminds us that we all sin, and that it cost His Life. It reminds us that we all die, and that only He can change that.

What should our attitude be while taking it? Gratitude. Penitence. Sorrow. Joy. Hope. Humility.

What should we reflect on? Many mothers and fathers with young children have a hard time during communion concentrating on what is going on. Does God accept and understand us taking it? I'd like to think that when I call my own kids to the table after they're grown and have their own children that it will give me great joy to have them there even when the babies are crying or someone has to leave the table to change a diaper or attention is distracted from the story that I'm telling by a child wanting to tell their own. Because their stories will be part of the story of my family, and I want to hope that I will be wise enough to listen.

What does the Lord's Supper mean to you? It remains inexpressible in words, no matter how hard I try.

What was the best experience you have had during the partaking? I've had a lot of "best" experiences. Here's one of them: The Moment That Passed.

There is no time specified, "As often as you do this..." doesn't say how often or what day. We know that it was done by our first Century brothers on the first day of the week but likely even every day for some time, and even more likely a part of a full fellowship meal.

Paul warned that because some did not properly think of the Lord's body that the result was sickness and even death. God takes it pretty serious doesn't He?

It is a Holy few moments where we get back to the basics of the faith, it is the gospel portrayed. We look back to his broken body and shed blood, acknowledge his resurrection, and anticipate His second coming, all in union and communion with our fellow believers.

The act of eating the bread and drinking from the cup does not bring grace but remembers and celebrates it.

Do I prefer it to be done weekly? Or, would I prefer it be done quarterly, or once a month, with more thoughtfulness and seriousness? Does it become routine when done weekly? The answers to these questions are as varied as the persons who must answer them.

I advise that the Lord's Supper never be done as a duty, or taken lightly or routinely, as the invitation song or the opening prayer, which are largely useless and have little meaning in most cases.

What can be more holy and deserve sincerity than to remember the price that was paid for sinners all?

Kenny,

I do think it matters how and when we eat the Lord's Supper. It's a symbol we all share that reminds us (like baptism) what Jesus did for us, that He's alive, and that He'll return. I do believe we should eat it more often, for instance, in our homes. Jesus wants us to remember Him, His abiding presence. And he chose the intimacy of a meal to accomplish this. We need to be careful that we don't allow it to be just a "religious" practice to be performed in a special place at a special time. The warning to the chruch at Corinth in 1 cor 14 had to do with selfishness and a lack of discipline. If we're going to get together to eat the supper, lets wait on each other. If we're eating it in our home, lets not allow it to become profane.

Very good discussion Kenny!

I don't have much to add. I admire the way large churches of Christ take the Lord's Supper, complete with communion meditations. They take more time with it, and it seems more devotional to me than the mechanical way it is usually done in smaller rural congregations such as the one I go to.

Thought I'd share a personal story Kinney..

On Good Friday in 1976 I was watching the 700 Club TV show with my wife.. I was an unbeliever but watched the show often and was moved by testimonies of healings and miracles. That Friday night Pat Robertson invited us to take communion with him.. we used a hamburger bun and apple juice.. it was so moving.. my heart was touched and broken. The next day I surrendered my life to Jesus.

Just wanted to share that because I believe that there is power in the Lord's supper.. the Spirit is there in the elements.. and even though my theology probably sez that unbelievers should not partake in communion.. I am so glad I did way back then :)

1. When does your church take communion? Sundays.

2. Does it matter when we take the Lord's Supper? No.

3. Do you think it has changed over the centuries? Absolutely.

4. What does taking the Lord's Supper do for us as believers? As Phillip Yancey might write, it reminds us of the "scandal of Grace." A God who would willingly live with and die for imperfect, sinful beings should cause us to be happy, joyful, sad, reflective, and realize who we belong to each day.

5. What should our attitude be while taking it? What should we reflect on? Everything from celebrative to introspective. Jesus, each other.

6. Many mothers and fathers with young children have a hard time during communion concentrating on what is going on. Does God accept and understand us taking it? If He doesn't we're all in a world of trouble.

7. What does the Lord's Supper mean to you? It is my weekly reminder of how much God loves me.

8. What was the best experience you have had during the partaking? When our church smiles at each other, sometimes stands and says, "Until He comes again."

While I take the bread I usually reflect on the past week and all the sins I've committed and repent of them - and realizing without the Grace of God that was given to me by His will alone; I would righteously be condemned.

When I take the cup, I think on the future. The upcoming week into eternity - and thanking Him profusely for His Gift in Jesus.

preacherman, I caught something you said and wanted to get your view: "The Lord's Supper reminds me that it is not of my own power that I am saved."

So you didn't choose to be saved? Or did you?

If you hold that it is not by your power you were saved, yet maintain that by your free will you chose to be saved, you have a contradiction.

Either you had a part in it by deciding (some sort of power) or you didn't (you didn't decide, God put it in you to come to Him) - John 6:44

Just curious where you fall on that.

Wonder why?

I know I asked alot of questions on this discussion. I think this is going to be one of the "hot topics", along with "baptism" that we will ask from time to time. As Japhy noticed I do like to open those can of worms that we tend to avoid or not deal with as believers. It is my goal on this blog to stretch our minds, hearts, and faith.

I want to thank each of you so much for answering these questions. It is wonderful that we can share our experiences that we have such as the table. A definate time for us as believers to grow closer to God as we realize who we are and what God has done for us. A time of rememberance, reflection and celebration.

I have been strengthened as you have shared with me your beliefs and experiences. I think we need to make sure that it doesn't become an empty event that we go through just to complete of you would the check list of things to do in worship. I as well love it how so many churches are having a time of meditation and testamony of what it means at heart.

I want to thank you bloggers for sticking with me while my family continues to adjust to things. I at this time blog when I can find the time. And to answer Bill's statement. I currently do not have an e-mail address but am working on getting a gmail account set up. When I do get it set up and know the address I will share it with you.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and being an encouraging part of my spiritual life.

Any suggestions on how to move the Lord's Supper away from a 'funeral service' atmosphere?

interesting questions and comments.

i usually gather with a bunch of believers that call themselves quakers.

they have a different view on baptism and holy communion and when and how it is done.

i figure that Christ is with us always, and when we remember Christ in a good and respectful way, we are also very much with Him.

Westcoast Witness,
I would try a few things:
1. Stress the Ressurection!
2.Sing songs that include both death, barrial and resurrection into the part of the service.
3.Allow people to share their stories about what the Lord's Supper means to them.
4.Sermon Series/ Classes on the Lord's Supper
