Thoughts On Prayer

I was watching the inauguration and prayer service this past week and thought it was great to see all the different prayers offered up to God for our country and leaders. We are taught in scripture to pray for our leaders. We are taught by Paul to pray without ceasing as well , which got me to thinking about our prayer lives. I think it is wonderful that we as believers can boldly approach God in prayer. There was a time in my life when I didn't understand and practice constant prayer as I should. It is my personal opinion that prayer gives believers a deeper relationship with God and stronger faith as well. When our prayer life suffers so does our relationship with God and our faith. So the questions I want us to discuss and ponder for ourselves are: Do we as believers pray as we should? Do we find ourselves praying only in times of trouble? How does the Lord's Prayer help us? What is it for? Do we or should we as Christians choose our words when praying? If so why? Do we as believers understand the attitude we should have when approaching God in prayer? How do we pray without ceasing? How have you seen God work in your life through prayer? How have you seen its power?
How is your prayer life?
What do you think?

Prayer is the heart of one's devotional life and discipleship. Somehow I keep putting Bible study ahead of it, but both are vitally important. Thanks for reminding me.

Kinney,
I share the experiences of prayer with you. This is a time when we can release our burdens and praise God for granting us reason, (faith in Christ) to know that God can take care of our burdens. It is special and there is none who can grasp what the experience has meant to the petitioner. God touches our lives as individuals with a unique delivery of His assurance.

Hi, GBS! I was reading comments on Jim's blog, so I decided to stop by.

You pose some good questions. One problem I have personally is that I catch myself praying for the same things, and praying mostly for things on our own life. It's not that I don't pray for others throughout the day; it's that I don't remember the things I felt a need to pray for.

I don't think we should just mindlessly recite the Lord's prayer (or Rosaries, or whatever). It gets too easy to get trapped into a rut, and our relationship with the Lord suffers. I see the Lord's prayer as a guide that teaches us the kinds of things we should pray about and the respect we should have for the Lord.

I also like James 4:3: "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." I believe our prayers should be spoken in a spirit of thankfulness, humility, and petition for others, instead of ourselves. The Lord knows our needs, before we even ask.

Your post has given me a new determination to not let myself fall back into the rut of praying the same things all the time. And as I do that, I will naturally be more God-minded and look for others' needs that I can pray for.

Thought of something else. Ultimately, true worship lies in the heart. It is entirely possible for someone to recite a Rosary or the Lord's prayer and experience true fellowship with our Lord and Savior. The "danger" is that repetition is habit-forming, which can result in mindlessly going through the motions. But maybe that's just me. :)

Hi Kinney,
I'm visiting your blog, again, on this same post, from Greg's blog. Greg and I were noticing that blogger activity in our network is falling, flat. We'r hoping to stimulate the network a little toward more interaction.

Thank you Nancy.
I think it should be a reminder that spurs on on to developing and making time to pray.

I totally agree with you Adam. Thank you brother for you wonderful words and reminder that Bible study is a must as well.

Jeleasure,
Wonderful words and motivational thoughts for every believer. You are right on. I totally agree brother that God touches our lives with a unique delivery of His assurance.

Greg and Jeleasure you pose excellent thoughts that has made me ponder. I sometimes wonder when we pray and it is the same prayer, example (guide gaurd adn direct us, and on and on other phrases). I often wonder how God feels about. Ritual prayers I do believe is prayed from the heart can be just as power and effective. We don't know the hearts and souls of men. I believe prayerng scripture can be extremely power. I want to challenge not just you guys to do it but all of my readers to pray scriptre. I can remember when I was in ICU the first I prayeld Phippians where Paul states, "I can do all things through Christ." It was definately that prayer and others that helped me during a very dark time in my life.

I want to thank everyone for there wonderful comments.

I want to challenge everyone to work on their prayer life.. Pray daily. Pray with confidence. Pray expecting. Pray understanding who God and what he can do. Pray scripture. Jounal your prayers. Let pray be the guiding for in your life.
Thanks again for all of your thoughts and comments on this topic.

Kinney,
I also would like to add that litergies are taken very seriously by certain believers. So, as you say, it is the heart that God knows and understands. If, even a liturgical prayer is recited with passion, it is the passion God desires; not just words.

Hi Kinney. It's been a while since I took time out to read blogs, and so the first one I came to was yours.
I agree with you on this post. I'd like to add that we often forget that prayer is a two-way conversation. When we pray, are we opening ourselves up to hear what God has to say to us?
