Giving Credit To Where Credit Is Due

I want to start by congratulating a friend and dynamic minister of faith, Charlton Taylor on his new ministry as "preaching minister" at Golf Course Road Church of Christ, Midland Tx. I wish him and his family many blessings during this new journey in his life.

I have been thinking lately as believers, do we give credit to God for the things he does in our lives? Is it easy for us as believers to give God credit for the good things ? When things are going great, do we see them as blessings from God or do we allow pride to set in and forget to thank God for the good. How thankful are we for those good things that come from God? There definitely have been times in my prayer life where I have had to stop and think about how much time I was thanking God for the good that was happening in my life. How much time do we spend thanking God for all the good things that happen to us?

Another thing that I want us to ponder is, do we give God credit for the bad things that happen as well. I strongly believe that we can grow in our faith when things are going both good and bad. I think we really grow and stretch when God allows the troubling times to occur. Yes, I understand that we suffer because of the consequences of sin that we have in our lives. I also believe that God allows the bad to occur in our lives to show us just how good and loving he really is. So when bad things happen in our lives should we give credit to God for the bad? Should we see both as opportunities to grow deeper and deeper in our relationship with Him?

So, why do we as believers give ourselves the glory for the things that we achieve or the good that goes on from day to day? Why is it that we forget to give God the glory for the good, the blessings? Can we grow in both times in our lives? How have you been changed in how you see the times of good and bad that has happened in your life? How have you allowed both of those times to deepen your relationship with God? How much time do we spend in prayer thanking God for the good and the bad? Think about what good things God is doing in your life right now. Please now think about what trials God has helped you overcome. Don't we serve a great God!!!!

I try to live a thankful life. Being thankful for what measure of good I have in my life - be it healthy, wealth, relationship and recognition.

Assigning "credit" becomes dangerous. Do I assign credit for my cancer to God? Me? Satan?

The only credit is to Jesus Christ who has purchased our redemption. All we must do is accept it.
The rest is just stuff until we get home.

I think we may have our own concept of what good or bad is. Gods word persuades me that God's wisdom is not of this world. In that, how do I really know what good or bad is in the sight of God other than what scripture teaches.

Bottom line is... that I want to trust him with my future, his promises, and when things get tough. There is a lot of comfort for me in that alone.

I love what this verse says Kinney:

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

We can be thankful "in" everything but we do not have to be thankful "for" everything.

Golf Course Road is about sixty miles from us, and we try to visit several times a year. We will have to go hear your friend speak.

God bless you and yours in 2009, preacherman!

I think this is related to "the fall." When we ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, we gained the ability to distinguish between good and evil, but not the omnipotence and ominpresence of God. In doing so, we can see the difference between something good and something evil, but only in the present. We can't see all the future ramifications, and therefore, can't really know when somehting really is truly good or evil.

We are at a disadvantage because we cannot have all the characteristics inherent in God. So, we complain about what we see is bad and are happy when something seems to be good, but if we had God's perspective instead of the childish perspective we have, we could see clearer.

I always try to see where God is in every situation.
My son fell Wednesday. I tried to get him to agree to go to the ER, he declined. The next day I took him to the doctor, he sent him to a specialist the next day. The specialist took one look and sent him for x-rays then called for an ambulance. I was in court with my pretrial for my divorce. But called to check on him when I came out, my dad was with him. I rushed to the hospital. His hip was broken and we had missed the 8 hour window. The surgeon is one of the best. He thinks we have a good chance because he is young and doesn’t weigh much. The nurses were great. My family was and is awesome. My aunts want him to stay with my dad so that they can take care of him. He’s in good spirits and we have shared some laughs. He also has his youth group around to cheer him on. We can only give it to God. Sure my son faces months of recovery and possibly a hip replacement but with God we will endure.

God has given us some great folks to help us out.

James 1:2-3
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

One of those hard scriptures, but goes along with praising God for the tough times, doesn't it?

Glad you're back to posting regularly again.

1 Thess 5:16-18 "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (ESV)

The will of God for us is to give thanks in all circumstances; and in addition to this, God's will is that we suffer (1 Peter 4:12-19).

Therefore, according to the will of God, we must suffer, and we must be thankful in that suffering. This is the will of God for His People.

Milly,
I want you to know that yo are in my prayers. God's comfort be with you sis.

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts on this subject. We need to remember that God is bigger than our situations. God's grace is greater than the good and bad. I like what Kansas Bob says, "in" and not "for". Let us remember that God is with us in the valley's and mountains. I agree with Tess we cannot know everything, future, outcome, but we trust. I believe that is why we are called believers.

Keep the comments and discussion comming. God bless everyone!!!!

I'll answer your question with a question Kinney :)

Can you give thanks for a sinful act or for demonic activity?

What do you think?

Interesting question to ponder. Do we ask ourselves is God bringing about something good through the situation? Did anything good come out of 9/11? Church attendance sky rocketed and some who where non-believers became Christians and some Christians made a new commitment to Jesus Christ. I have to ponder your question for a while. Thank you Kansas Bob for making me think.

I think that if we are asking "is God bringing about something good" or "did anything good come out of it" we would be thanking God in the situation not thanking Him for the bad stuff.

This is one of the big difference between mature Christians and new Christians. One praises the Lord and the other is tempted to praise himself.
