Joel Osteen "Becoming A Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day" Part 1
When people hear the name Joel Osteen they motivational speaker, preacher, televangelist, writer, mega church pastor, and countless other things. Their are many ministers who are jealous of his successes. Others don't like his style of preaching because he doesn't use much scripture or mention, sin or hell. Yet others see his style as a new age preacher with a positive message.
If you have never heard of Joel Osteen he is an author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Your Best Life Now. Joel Osteen is the pastor of a new generation. I love the way Joel Osteen preaches very positive and upbeat. He delivers very encouraging messages to believers to live their lives in a positive way make a difference for the kingdom by the way they look at life and share their faith with those around them. When I come home from Sunday's I turn on turn on the television at 10:00 p.m. and feast upon his encouraging words. Yes, he doesn't talk much about sin, hell, quote scripture left and right like others may. He has a different approach and style. He has a different gift. I remember listening to him while in the hospital and being brought to tears through his words as I was so encouraged to keep on fighting and holding on to God's strength and hope.
I bought his first book, "Your Best Life Now" and thought it was a great book for improving your life.
The new book by Osteen, "Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day"
As I critique his book I look at it with an open mind and hope you do as well.
I will share with you things I agree and disagree with and would like your discussion as well.
In the introduction Joel says, "What does it mean to be a better you? First, you understand that God wants you to become all that He created you to be. Second, it is imperative that you realize that God will do His part, but you must do your part as well." I agree with this statement so many Christians sit back and wait for God to act in their lives and bless their lives without any effort. We must do are part (now not in the sense of legalistic view how ever, but as James 2:26, says "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead). To become a better you, you must:
1. Keep pressing forward ( I agree with this statement because it is found in Philippians 3:12-ff & Hebrews 12:1-3.)
2. Be positive towards yourself (I agree with this statement we need to remember that we were created in the image of God Genesis 1:26).
3. Develop better relationships (I agree with this point because it is based on 1 Corinthians 15:33 Bad company corrupts good character.")
4. Form better habits (As Christians we are to change the way we live and change our habits.
5. Embrace the place where you are ( I don't know if I agree with this one or not. I know God loves me right where I am. Nothing can separate me from the love that is in Christ Jesus according to Romans 8, but I am still thinking on this point).
6.Develop your inner life. (As far as Christians Paul says in Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, life by faith in the son of God who loved me and gave himself for me." As a Christian perspective I would disagree with this point of develop your inner life).
7. Stay passionate about life (As far as Christians go we need to stay passionate about he Christian life.).
In The first Chapter on page 3 and 4, then I will end the discussion for today here with this thought for discussion. Osteen states, "He's a progressive God, and He wants every generation to be increasing in happiness, success and significance. No matter where we are in life, God has more in store. He never wants us to quit growing. We should always be reaching for new heights in our abilities, in our spiritual walk, in our finances, careers, and personal relationships. We all have areas where we come up higher. We may have achieved a certain level of success, but there are always new challenges, other mountains to climb. There are new dreams and goals that we can pursue."
What does this say about contentment? Is it okay to be content where you are in life? Do you think Joel is right? Do you think God wants us to keep growing in our faith? What about our finances, careers, and personal relationships? Is God a progressive God? For those that have read this book what did you think? Was it a help? Was it a blessing? Has Joel Osteen been a blessing to your life? Is it easy for ministers to be jealous of others successes such as Joels and Lakewood Church? Has anyone ever been to Lakewood Church what did you think? I have real problems with the "health and wealth" gospel (I recently blogged about this). To my eye, Olsteen takes Norman Vincent Peale and Zig Zigler's stuff and tacks on Bible verses. I haven't read this particular book; does he ever spend time exegeting a passage or are the verses always quoted sans context?
Admittedly, I'd be more comfortable with this if Olsteen didn't try to make it a religious book. Let him admit that he's just a motivational speaker and write on self-esteem, positive thinking etc., and I won't have a problem.

No, I appreciate your thoughts, comments and adding to the discussion. I have heard your point of view from many people and can understand it.
Joel is working to answer a couple of the great philosophical questions: what is the truly good life and how does one attain it?
I fear that Osteen encourages the wrong kind of discontentment, because he lumps worldly success and financial gain into the message of kingdom hope.
I would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him on the idea that God is a progressive God. I just don't think he and I would agree on what God believes is progress.
"Becoming a Better Me" isn't God's goal. "Re-Creating a Better World" is God's purpose.
Pressing forward is an awesome message, if you and Christ have the same goal in mind. I'm not sure Joel and Jesus have that in common.
I prefer be honest with yourself rather than be positive with yourself.
Develop better relationships is stellar, and would be an even better message if God's unifying call and power were included in it.
Form better habits is great advice. So is "Go found a multi-million-dollar company."
I don't understand how "Embrace the Place Where You Are" meshes with the rest of his message.
I would disagree with you on "develop your inner life" if by that, Joel means growing in one's personal prayer / meditation / lectio / communion with God type of inner life.
Stay passionate about life.
Here are my two biggest concerns.
1) All of this is good ADVICE. If you don't teach people HOW to do it, you are just waving food under their noses and then laughing when they get hungry again. Stephen King once had a character say, "Only a fool gives advice and only a fool takes it." Instruction is far more valuable than advice, but most people don't WANT instruction. They want something they can feel good about hearing, and that is what advice offers.
2) His focus seems to be: YOUR best life now. Becoming a better YOU. You, you, you, you, you, you, you. It is all about you. You and God.
Where is the community?
Where is the sacrifice?
Where is God mourning over the brokenness of the world?
Did Jesus really die to give me what Joel calls my best life now?
Did Peter and Paul and Barnabas and James experience this best life that Joel describes?
I believe Joel Osteen is preaching the logical extreme of the "me and God" view of reality. Either you reject the world with extreme asceticism or you embrace all the world's gifts (the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life).
Don't worry about morality. Don't worry about love. Just get BETTER. Don't define BETTER. Just get it!
To close by returning to my opening idea, Joel suggests that whatever you define for yourself as "better" should be your goal, and that THAT is what God wants for you, and that is why he is both so popular and so far away from the Christian message.

I'm glad you've found encouragement from Joel Osteen in your time of great need. Tom saw him on Larry King recently and was very impressed with him as a Christian in his outlook toward others and his positive attitude about things. I have never seen him or heard him (or read any of his books), so I can't comment first hand. I'm just sharing Tom's impression of him, and Tom is hard to impress with Christianity and Christian living.

Joel Osteen. Wow. There are a lot of things to be said, but many of them have been said here. I have to be honest that I just can't get past the plastic face and soft-focus imagery every time he preaches. I am all for positive messages, especially when preached to harassed, helpless, broken people who need a word of hope. Osteen is good at this.
But the people I know who are falling into the orbit of Christ can't stand this image of Christianity: the plastic, perfect, nice-guy church culture. They want the raw stuff, the truth, the real experience of life lived on the ground, grace after failure along with a heady dose of strong discipleship. Especially the pre-Christians.
This guy just isn't in my world.

I greatly appreciate your comments and adding to the discussion whether you have read it yet or not. Your comments are always welcome on this blog. Yes I believe as Christians we are to be content with any and every situation we face in life as Paul mentions in his letters. Does the abundant life that Christ has given us include success in this life? Does God want us to fiancially successful and or are Christians to be poor, live in poverty, have jobs that are minimum wage, have no dreams or goals for anything better? Does God want more for us? Joel is asking these questions.

Thrid, I agree with it is about improving yourself. It is about I. I believe in improving yourselve you improve the communiity. You are right. It doesn't talk about self sacrifice. It doesn't talk about community. It talk about the how to become a better you. I do believe that he believe that in doing so, you help improve the community and those around you because you are thinking and being the positive, encouraging person God want you to be. There are a lot of people and churches where it is all about "I" and not "God". Ministries and worship where the focus is on "I" instead of "God". Christianity is all about our relationship with God. It is all about no long I but Christ. But, in Christ, we find who we are our talents, gifts, our real better self. :-)
Nick Joel does mention morality and sin and chaning our lifestyle in this book. On page 41, Josteen states, "The Bible says, "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law." The curse is behind any kind of defeat- sin, mistakes, wrong choices, fear, worry, constant sickness, unhealthy relationships, or bad attitudes. Please understand that are all things from which you have already been set free. But heare's the catch: If you don't appeciate and take advantage of your freedom, if you don't get your thoughts, your words, your attitudes going in the right direction, it wont do you any good."
So, he does mention morality, sin and changing your life for the better. He goes on and writes, "You may be sitting back and waiting on God to do something supernatural in your life, but the truth is, God is waiting on you." Wow. "You must rise up in your authority, have a little backbone and dermination, and say, "Iam not going to live my life in mediocrity, bound by addictions, negative and defeated. No, I'm going to do like the Apostles Paul and start pressing forward. I'm going to tkae hold of everything God has for me." pg. 41.

I'm glad that morality is not the focus of Osteen's message, because I do not believe it is the focus of the biblical message. Creating nice, polite, friendly people is not the focus of the biblical narrative.
Redeeming the shattered creation from the curse is the story of the Bible. The way the world currently exists, affluence always comes at someone's expense. No one gets rich innocently. Joel is preaching this message of "hope" to the most affluent people on earth. The poorest person in America is richer than most people in India, China, Africa, or Latin America. Jesus taught the disciples that "poor and hopeless" is truly a matter of perspective and faith (see the widow's two cents).
I believe that great danger lies in the idea that each individual improving themselves will by extension improve the whole community. That is not the way of Jesus. The way of Jesus is for each individual to submit to the needs of the living, breathing community to which they belong. What's more, we still haven't anchored ourselves in a Jesus-definition of "improvement." We keep coming back to the question that Joel leaves each individual reader to answer: What does "better" mean to you?
When the Apostle Paul pushed forward, he pushed forward to martyrdom. He pushed forward to arrest and trial and imprisonment and death. When Barnabas pushed forward, he pushed forward his money and his life to support his brothers and sisters, new converts far from home. When Jesus pushed forward, he moved downward (Php 2). That is just not the story I hear Pastor Joel telling.
I don't believe we are equipped without serious spiritual discipline (simplicity, prayer, fellowship, Scripture) to discern the type of "Better" that God would have us push towards. Joel anoints the values of an affluent society.
His work has some Christian principles supporting it, as does most positive outlook writing. I believe God is working every single moment for his kingdom's overthrow of the curse. But the effects of the curse are everywhere, and pressing forward to my own goals in no way guarantees that I will be working to help GOD'S will be done on earth as in heaven. If my goal is to serve God in all things, Joel's advice might help once I find someone who will teach me techniques to implement such advice as "Build Better Relationships" and "Form Better Habits". Just Do It isn't enough.
But if my goals lie elsewhere, Joel's advice will lead me to work against the kingdom of God. That is my fear, that without a healthy Biblical definition of "better" and/or "improvement" the author anoints the value system of the reader.

I love positive sermons because I believe that the Church of Christ and the Restoration Movement for so long have heard sermon after sermon after sermon on hell fire brimestone sermons were they feel what is the use in being a Christian. Or they have heard you need the law in order to be a Christ and ignored grace. It is time to encourage our people, give them strength, healing, revival, let them experience the God who promises showing love to a thousand generations to those who love me and keep my commandments. A God of grace and mercy. A God of redemption and sanctification.
A God who wants us as Christians to have abundant life.

I have not read Osteen's new book but I did his previous one. I found myself agreeing with many things he says as good sense.
On a theological level I think Osteen is cotton candy ... which btw is not always a bad thing. I love cotton candy at the Fair.
But Osteen I think needs to either digest the Psalms or explain the Cross of Jesus ... Life, even sanctified lives of the saints, can be grueling and painful ...

One of our Sunset instructors used to tell us we should read everything but the Bible as if we were eating fish--ingest the meat and spit out the bones. It would be difficult to find a book that everyone agreed with 100%--but is rather easy to find books that can encourage and inspire us. IMHO

1. Confess their sins and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
2. Take the bible literally; period.
2. Spend daily time in the holy bible studying it to gain wisdom and Godly knowledge
3. Build a deeper prayer life to grow in faith with the Lord
4. Forgive those who have done or spoken wrong of you, as Christ forgave us.
5. Show obdedience to the Lord and His commands.
6. Give out of your blessings and care for the widow and orphan.
7. Be thankful at all times, good or bad, and trust the Lord in them all.
8. Tell others about Christ.
These are all points made in Joel Osteen's latest book and supported with scripture from the bible.

I like Joel Osteen. I feel like some people really miss the point of his message.
Osteen understands what we REALLY struggle with on a daily basis. That's why God is using that man and he has the largest church in America. God is blessing him because he sincerely wants to help others.
His message resonates with people and makes Christianity REAL. It's not about Properity, it's about having the right "attitude" and faith.
Considering that anti-depressants are one of the top medications prescribed in this country, it's obvious we are in dire need of a positive message. It's all about a better attitude about others and ourselves in order to be more effective as a christian. If that's not real religion I don't know what is.
I hear people saying that he delivers a "watered down" message, but if he makes God "real" in the lives of others I don't agree with that at all.
I never thought so many people would think so negatively about joel osteen. He is doing his part and we should let him do it. He has improved so many lives (thinking wise). Fine he doesnt uses a lot of verses from the bible, common every body has a different style of preaching. I am currently reading his new book- becoming a better you, i think its a great book,it has helped me emotionally and mentally when i needed someone's help the most. And god wants us to prosper and there's nothing wrong to it if joel osteen writes about it.And if fellow preachers are jealous of his success then they are not walking in the path of god, because the bible clearly tells us that we shouldnt have such feelings. These are the works of the flesh.(galatians 5:19).
People say he has a fake smile, i would say pay attention to what he preaches not his looks because what he preaches will improve your thinking, his face and his plastic smile won't effect anything.
I've seen a lot of negative postings on other blogs about Joel Osteen. People accusing him of not being a christian and calling him a scam artist. yeah, how dare he teach that God wants us to be more than we believe is possible. Who is he to tell us that we should try to remain happy , positive and focused on the kind of lives that God would want us to have. Oh, Wait a minute, that is supposed to be what being a Christian is all about, isn't it? God Bless Joel and Victoria osteen and the work that they do.
