God's Will Be Done?

While in the hospital my prayer life has changed in a dramatic way. I prayed to God in the hospital not my will be done but your will be done in every area and situation of my life. Jesus prayed it in the garden as he was faced with the cross. As Christians we should pray it.
Isn't that Paul was getting to when he said it is no longer I but Christ? It was all about doing His will?

The questions I have are: Why should we pray for God's will to be done in our lives? Is it hard a hard prayer to pray and live by? Why? What happens in a Christian's life when we live according to God's will? When the Church does God's will how will the church be blessed? Function? Grow? Behave? When ministers, elders, and church leaders pray this prayer how will it affect their ministries and the Church?

What do you think?

I think people have a hard time praying "God's will" because they don't want to give themselves completely to Him. People want to have power over their own lives. Praying for God's will is giving Him total control of their future. Too scary for some.

Good post.

Praying for God's will may lead you to where you don't want to be and keep you there longer than you wanted to stay. It may also mean repenting of sins that you (I) really don't care to give up.

I think God's will is going to be done whether we hop on board or not.

Praying "God's will" for me is more of a process of- show me Your will, help me see Your will, shove me down the road to Your will, let me know for sure once again it is Your will, Your will be done, oops what was that will of Yours again?

I know, "here he goes again" As Aw said Thy will, will be done. I like Aw pray that God will accept my prayer knowing I am but human. And that I am not intentualy praying for something that he is not willing to consider. When we hold Paul up as an example to follow God's will, We are deffinitly going to fail. As Paul said when we get married and have a family we cheat god out of some of our love and devotion and think about our family at least part of the time. Paul devoted all his time to Christ, we do not. don't tell me you do because I won't believe you. There are still a few men on earth like Paul they are called monks.they are devoted to one thing their's is not a devided devotion. try as we do we cannot become perfect here.

I agree with Ancient Wanderer. God's will is going to be done regardless. But I think our prayer should be that we are used as his instruments to bring that will to pass. Now for me, that's the scary part.

Is God's will going to be done anyway? Isn't that a bit too simplistic?

For example, it is God's will that each of His children to give Him 100% of their devotion and to be completely surrendered to Him. Isn't it? Are we?

He is not willing that any should perish, but many will because they reject the light of His revelation and refuse to repent. So lets be careful about how we perceive God's will.

For God's will to be complete in my life, I must participate with Him. To put it another way, I must walk in the Spirit before I can hope to live in God's will.

Royce,

Good corrective. I guess I was thinking that we are not quite as inexpendable as we sometimes think ourselves to be. If I don't choose to be God's hands he has his own hands. God can get his overall agenda through with or without my help.

But you are right. To say his will is going to be done regardles was overly simplistic of me. God took the risk of giving us freedom which is a wonderful thing, but sometimes his heart is grieved by what we do with that freedom. Thanks for helping me think this through.

Royce and Wade- "Is God's will going to be done anyway? Isn't that a bit too simplistic?"

I don't intend to answer for Don, as you know he has no loss of words and the use of them. But Don and I might have understood the question differently than you. I understood the question was pertaining to one's prayer life. When we send up a prayer to God the Father, and say "your will, not mine" I believe we say I would like this but I bow to your will. I don't believe we can persuade God to change his will to fit our needs or wants. so therefore "God's will, will be done" in the end. and by the way all the freedoms God allowed man was by his will.

Often when we pray "Thy will be done . . ." we treat it much like we do the command to ask things in the name of Jesus. Most people I know tag their prayers with "in Jesus' name, Amen" and then go on about their business. Even my three-year-old has learned to formulize his prayers with a holy tag.

Praying in Jesus' name is actually approaching the throne of God in an attitude that indicates our desire is that of the Savior. Praying God's will in all our situations is the same--it's a matter of attitude and not of formula or incantation.

If we truly want to pray that God's will be done, then as we approach our prayer time we must be willing and ready to adjust our own will to meet His. "My desire is that my will be the same as Yours, Lord. May Your will be done."

When we align our will with God's will I believe two things happen:
1) God's Kingdom grows and we rejoice for the glory of God. And,
2) Those who oppose God and His will come out of the woodwork to thwart and/or distract us.

I think "acient wanderer" has it right. God's will is going to be done no matter what.

When I was diagnosed with cancer 3 years ago all I could think of at the time is "why me." I have four boys to raise, and they need a dad. But as I prayed I knew the Holy Spirit would take what I was really trying to say and make it sound just perfect to God.

I knew God knew my heart deep down. He knew everything before I even asked. More than anything the experience didn't make me pray more, but it did make me more dependant upon God. And it helped me to re-prioritize what was really important in life.

Those were some of the hardest days of my life, and yet, some of the best too.

God is not willing that any should perish

When we pray for God's will --are we really asking that he do something for us that we want or are we praying that His spirit will move us to be messengers ( "salt, leaven and light") so His will can be truly be done on earth as it is in Heaven?

God Bless

I love this discussion. I am afraid that sometimes we use "your will be done" as a cop out from really asking God for the things we desire. We say, "please heal ______, but your will be done." To me that is almost like saying "we just kind of want this to happen." What ever happened to "let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)??

Let's be willing to accept God's will in anything but let's be bold in our prayers and ask for those things which we know he is capable of with a faith that doesn't need to use a "spiritual tag" (as so eloquently put in an earlier comment) to allow God some "wiggle room" in our desires.

God can handle what we pray. And he will give the answer that he deems best, but let us pray boldly as those who can approach the throne of grace with confidence.

I think we should pray God's will be done. It is total surrender of ourselves to him and that is what Christianity is all about. Giving everything over to God. His will be done in everything. When the Israelites didn't hop on board they were lead into captivity. I think we can learn a lesson from them don't you think? Shouldn't we hop on board the will of God and follow what he wants from our lives, and churches?

When Jesus' disciples came to Him and said "Lord, teach us to pray" He taught them pray saying "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven".

I can't imagine Jesus teaching his followers and closest friends to pray a vain prayer. If I believed God would not hear my prayer and would not act to change people or events to accomplish His will and purposes, why pray?

Except when tagging the phrase near the end of a prayer in order to prop up our unbelief, our praying for God's will to be done should not be vain repetition but rather a sincere request with the expectation that God will intervene in the affairs of men and work out His will in their lives.

I really believe that as we as God's will, will be done. As Christiains, ministers, elders, church leaders, we should pray God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We shoulld pray for His will to be done in our lives, in our families, businesses, ministries, churches, every aspect. When we do that we will begin to see blessing in our lives becuase as we do his will and not ours.
I want to thank everyone for adding to this discussion.

God's will will be done, no matter what... It is our choice to be a part of his will, choosing to follow Him and grow with Him is not an easy choice, I see it as two perspectives, say a father wants to take his child to the ice cream shop for a treat and he notices the kid outside playing in the mud. He goes, gets the kid, cleans him up and puts some clean clothes on him and says ok! lets go, walk with me to the parlor. most of the christians in our generation want to stay next to the tub! tell everyone about the glory of the tub and how it cleans, but never want to take the big steps towards the ice cream, our heavenly reward, God's will in our lives. Christians who accept salvation but don't accept God's will in their lives will go to heaven, but lose their heavenly reward.

God's will will be done, no one will come before judgment without having had a choice to choose Christ or not. But will we be a part of that choice? He does not need us to run this world, but He lets us participate in his glory. Let us run the race marked out for us with perceverence.
