My thoughts on the Da VInci Code
I am amazed and embarrased at the reaction of the Da Vinci Code is having by Christians. Christians need to understand that the Da Vinci Code is fiction. When Christians over react over Harry Potter or Da Vinci Code it makes Christians look stupid, and mindless. Believe it or not Christians do have mind of their own, and can even think on their own. We can read books and movies without it affecting our faith or view of God and His Son Jesus. God gave us a powerful mind to discern. Let us use the minds that God has given us. I can't wait to see the movie this weekend.

Good thoughts. It is amazing how we can be pulled into chasing "fictional" rabbits by novelist. I wonder sometimes why we pick such odd fights. I do believe there is legitmate concern that this will feed more fuel to the skeptics but I don't believe people are going to pulled from their faith because of a Hollywood produced movie. may be in the end it may actually be a blessing as it may bring more discussion about Jesus to the minds of lost souls, and isn't that what we want an opening to tell people about the real life and work of Jesus?
Nick,
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. I do think it might generate discussion and if it does so, praise God! I think Christians are smarter than most preacher give them credit. I did see the movie today. I am going to have some comments on my blog later on. It makes you think..."What if"...but it is only fiction and Hollywood Entertainment. Again thanks for your comments.
So what do you do when the college senior comes with questions and doubts about the movie? Dismiss them as obviously false?
I agree that calls for boycotts are a bad idea, but to flip the other way and say this is obviously fiction leaves a wide swath of people wondering what to believe.
Many protestant churches have not educated the believers on the early church history. Many have neglected to teach about real heresy as they battle contrived issues of division, calling things false that have no bearing on truth.
Many have no idea about things I assume our foundational. Our church will discuss the book in a positive way, giving thanks that we can explore these issues and learn the truth, but an attitude that says this issue is silly may leave a lot of people afraid to share their real doubts and in the end may keep them from developing true belief.
Darrin,
I appreciate your comment and oppion. I agree with your point that we need to inform our members on early church history and the canon of scripture. It is great that you and your church are looking at the book in a positive way. I do hope that this book and movie generates discussion and challenge people to read the Bible.
Again Darrin, thanks for your comments. I got on your blog and enjoyed your posts. I am glad that Wade Tannehill is a blogger now. Wade and I ministered together in Kansas. I appreciate his friendship, theology and wisdom. Darrin, hope God blesses your ministry as well.
It's a bit more complicated than simply dismissing it as "fiction." As is dealt with here, Brown makes the claim - on page ONE - that his references to Christian documents and rituals are accurate. Using that foundation, he then writes "fiction", leaving most readers confused as to what is "accurate" and what is not.
That said, the message of the story challenges the very nature (and personal claims) of Jesus Christ. That fact sets it apart from fantasy stories such as Harry Potter.
I won't repost it, but consider my comment over at Faith 2.0.
How is that not something we as Christians should confront?
