Question Everything

As you know, I love asking questions. I question almost everything in life. I believe that through questioning you encourage people to think. I believe it is important to think for yourself not just rely on what others say about things especially when it some to religion. Questioning strengthens faith. If we don't question, we stay stagnant. So, why does the Church discourage people from questioning doctrine, practices, traditions and even God and the Bible? Is it a bad thing to question? How does asking question help faith? How does asking questions help us think? Do you question? If so, what do you question? How has asking the questions in your life, faith? If you can give examples.

When questioning it is important to understand that we won't and can't have the answers to all things. No one does.

I agree. We don't have and won't have all the answers. In my life, it has seemed that the Church does forbid, discourage, others questioning doctrine, practices, and even life situations when it comes to God.

Questioning is the antithesis of having faith. To have faith is to believe without having any evidence. However, to question is to ask explicitly for evidence.

Although a well-answered question can strengthen and clarify one's beliefs, too many un- or badly answered questions can slowly tear away at the capacity to have faith.

If you never question, it is not hard to have faith. Even a few questions which logic and experience cannot answer can be pushed away if you can muster enough faith. Stockpile too many questions though, and you might not have enough faith left to fight off the tide of doubt.

This is why Jesus asked us to believe without questioning -- like little children do -- and why he commended the disciples who accepted his resurrection without needing to see his wounds.

"Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil." ~ Thessalonians 5:19-22.

In order to prove all things and hold fast what's good, we have to ask questions.

I disagree with Carson's statement "To have faith is to believe without having any evidence." Some evidence is required, or there is no way to test and prove. Scripture provides some level of evidence - it exists. It is remarkably consistent. It is unlike other religious writings.

Are his statements true with regard to faith in any religion? There's a saying: "It's good to have an open mind ... but not so open that your brains fall out!"

Jesus never said little children don't question. He couldn't have been around very many of them and have believed that about them!

The same Jesus who gave a blessing to those who have not seen also asked the crowds twice to believe -- if for no other reason, because of the miracles (John 10:38; 14:11).

I'd have to disagree with Carson as well. Job questioned God. Didn't get the answers he thought he deserved, but he questioned God nonetheless.

We can ask questions, but if we insist our questions must be answered before we serve God, that's a form of idolatry. We put ourselves on the throne that way.

But if we ask questions and wait for God to answer, our faith will grow through testing (the waiting period) and by affirmation (when God answers).
