What Can Ministers Do After Leaving Ministry

Ministers leave ministry at large numbers every yeaar, I being one of them. Yes, I do fill in at area churches when needed but I am talking about careers afterword. So, what can Ministers do when they choose to leave full time ministry. What can you do when your degree is, education, is specialized in Ministry, Youth Ministry, or Theology. If you have left ministry what have you done. Have you found it difficult. What jobs can ministers who have decided a new path do. If you have left ministry what are you doing now. Is there hope for those of us who have a B.A. in Bible for the real world. I need ideas. Help in choose what I do next.. Please share your thoughts.

What do you think.

  1. Communication.......as ministers it was a huge part of what we did. And in the "real" world there is a need for great communicators.

Everything is moving towards conversation. So as experts in communication ministers are uniquely positioned to use those skills in the business world.

  2. This question has been one that crops up in my mind occasionally. For instance, sometimes ministers leave the ministry not by choice, but by circumstance. Then, if you're like me and hold Bachelors and Masters degrees in the field of theology find I am both over- and under-qualified for most positions.

That being said, the old joke among the brothers I went through the gauntlet with was "sell insurance". (I did have some forethought and added teacher certification to my resume years ago, so I have more to fall back on than many.) I might suggest some sort of editing/copy-editing positions, but I've seen the way most of us edit our own material.

The best answer to your question, though, Preacherman, is to look for fields of interest--I've known some who because of interest in publishing have done start-ups in that area. Another avenue is to make your writing/communication skills work for you--investigate making your blog pay, or find one of the ever-increasing freelance outlets on the Internet (or print) media and sign on. After all, having spent the months and years of writing weekly sermons ought to prepare us for some sort of creative/freelance writing field.

Dan Bouchelle has a lot of experience on this one. May want to see what his thoughts are.
