How far is too far?

How far is too far? Should Christians tolerate this? Why or why not? Is there a difference in turn the other cheek and standing up for what is right? Stand up to those who would tarnish the name of Jesus Christ? Would Muslims tolerate something like this if it were about Mohammed? Should Christians just sit back and tolerate this? Why or why not? How does this make you feel? What do you think? Share your thoughts.

  1. Kinney,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I had no clue.

I watched the video and I was not as offended as I expected to be. The humor in this is that it’s so out-of-character for Jesus who refused to be the militant Messiah so many wanted him to be. This is far less offensive to me than the “scholars” who claim Jesus wanted to set up an earthly kingdom but failed and died disillusioned on the cross with no subsequent resurrection. At least he does rise from the dead in this parody.

I think it all depends on how we look at it. We could take this as almost a compliment to Jesus since most people know that he was not retaliatory. That is why this is an over-the-top parody. We Christians might also take it as a compliment that the producers of SNL could put this on TV without fearing death threats and bomb scares from the Christian community, which is exactly what they would have gotten if they had parodied another world religion’s central figure.

Also, I think that evangelical groups urging boycotts in response to this is quite ironic. While the parody is that Jesus was not retaliatory, some claiming to be his followers are retaliating by intending to financially hurt companies that sponsor SNL, some of whom employ Christians. Is that what Jesus would do?

Better to ignore this and show the world that we can turn the other cheek. We are not militants and neither was our Lord. Fighting this is just giving more ammunition to Christ’s detractors.

While I choose to take this parody as a compliment, it probably wasn’t intended to be. In fact, it may have been calculated to get a rise out of evangelicals who are playing right into the hands of those who mock Christ by giving this so much publicity. Most of us wouldn’t have known about it if not for the links from evangelical websites.

  2. Thanks Wade for your comment. I greatly appreciate it. I get frustrated because I see stuff like this over and over and over again that pick on Jesus or Christians but shows wouldn't touch Mohammed, Buddha with a ten foot pole when poking fun. And they know why. Do Christians ever stand up against or for Jesus or the gospel or should we always appear weak? Always turning the other cheek? Never standing against those who oppose? When $ is on the line people listen and act. Look at Chick Fil A in their stand against gay marriage. They made tons of $$$$$$ for the quarterly, early profit. Should Christians speak out? How? Why? How much do we tolerate?

Sad. Shows just how far our culture has gone away from God.

  4. It is not making fun of Jesus. It is making fun of Quentin Tarantino and our culture of violence in the United States. It is satire and the very purpose of satire is to be absurd, over the top, and a little bit offensive to get your point across.

Kinney, instead of my giving you an answer, I am looking for an answer from you, as a leader in the Church.

As we know the Pope quit and brought about the necessity for a "conclave" to appoint/elect a new Pope as head of the Catholic/universal church.
Question: Is it right for members of the church of Christ to refer to the Pope as "Father" ?if not then why not.?

Didn't watch the video, don't need to I guess. The Church is under attack, always has been and always will be. God told us that, so it's no surprise. We as Christians need to keep/start doing what God told us to do. Preach the gospel. He will do the rest. Remember the parable of the sower? I know you do! As for the question about calling the pope, pope, it's just a word. Means nothing to Christians. Calling someone Father on the other hand is. Matthew 23:9 reads "And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven" Psalms 111:9 reads "He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is HIS name" Luke 14:12 reads "Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
