ReplyDeleteMidweek services can be viewed in numerous ways, and I'm only capable of seeing a select few, I'm sure. First of all, it is not commanded. 2nd, it most certainly is not forbidden. 3rd, coming from someone who has spent 50+ years attending mid week services, it is beneficial (at least to me). To explain a bit deeper, we are commanded to meet on the first day of the week. I believe this forbids a more convenient Saturday night meeting because we prefer to do something else on Sunday. Saturday is not the first day of the week (no matter how you want to twist it).
ReplyDeleteBeyond that, we are not commanded. We do have examples, particularly in Acts, where the Christians met "daily from house to house". Read what all else they did, as far as fellowship, fasting, prayer, and other things. Certainly, if we met daily, it could be of benefit to our spiritual growth, fellowship, etc. So, from that, I am one who believes there are things to be gained by meeting mid week. Anytime I am with my brothers and sisters in Christ, and have fellowship, I'm built up. I study and learn. I sing, pray, and devote dedicated time to God. Scripture tells us that the first century church did exactly that as they met daily from house to house. I've never met anyone who thought it was "wrong" to have a mid week service. Just most did not see any advantage to it. But if you attend that mid week service with the right attitude, you can come away better than when you went.
In this busy world, it truly is hard to find enough time for God. So, I chose to set aside that hour every Wednesday, not because I have to, but because I want to. For me, and speaking only for me, if I decide to give that hour up, I think I will have lost some of my desire for worship. What comes next in my life, giving up Sunday night... then what, giving up Sunday all together.. Now I'm talking about me, but thinking of former members who did exactly that, started missing Wednesday, and now don't attend at all.
God has us meeting every first day of the week for a reason. Acts 20:7 indicates part of that meeting is to break bread (partake of communion). Other passages state other specific acts of worship we are to achieve when we meet on the first day of the week. I sincerely think God has it weekly because he knows we need it on a regular basis, frequently, and not too much time between spending time with our church, not too many days between remembering the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, and not too many days between that time devoted solely to HIM.
I think that is the reason we don't meet yearly, quarterly or some other interval. I don't know who ever came up with the saying "we need our spiritual batteries recharged", but in fact, that is a very good way of putting it. We need reminded, encouraged, humbled, and numerous other things that we gain from the assembly, frequently so that Satan will not gain a foot hold. We only get those at the assembly. We can't get them from watching on TV.
For me, and again I say just for me, if I can get those beneficial things 3 times a week, I'm going to.
For me, it is not I "have" to go to church, it is more I "get" to go to church. It's not a chore, nor getting my ticket punched every week, it is a privilege, sincere privilege, to spend that time in worship. And all the other things that come out of that time, like humility, encouragement, growth, exhortation, building up and being built up, all icing on the cake.
Worship (the assembly) is a part of serving God, but there is a lot more to serving God than worship (the weekly assembly). I use the word worship here in reference to the assembly of the saints. We are to worship God constantly, but are command to assemble weekly.
So to sum up, the Wednesday night service is something we can chose or not chose to attend. God does not command it. There are benefits to those looking for benefits.
