Does Your Church Celebrate Christmas?

Believe it or not some churches and believers don't celebrate Christmas. Some churches and believers have never heard a "Christmas" sermon. Why? Is it wrong to celebrate the birth of Christ? Isn't Jesus, "Emmanuel" God with us? Without "Emmanuel" would there be salvation? Hope? A reason to celebrate? Does your church celebrate Christmas? Why or why not? Do you think it is important for us to celebrate the birth of Christ? Why or why not? Do you and and your family celebrate the birth of Christ on Christmas? If not, why not? If so, how?

What do you think?

  1. Preacherman,

I'm no opponent of sermons and worship times focused on the theme of Christmas. In fact, I've planned and participated in lots of them.

However, your post expresses shock that some believers have never celebrated Christmas per se. But that would also be true of first-century Christians. They didn't celebrate Christmas either. Granted, in their case, what we call Christmas had not yet come along. And maybe that's the source of the issue here: what do we mean by "Christmas"? Retelling the stories told in Matthew and Luke might be different from what most people refer to as "Christmas." Because of that uncertainty over the term, C.S. Lewis distinguished between what he called "Christmas" and "Xmas."

Interesting post. Thanks for raising these questions.

  2. i'm a disciple of Y'shua, but i haven't gone to "church" in about 10 years. i fellowship in various places at various times in varying configuration with believers, church members, disciples, and others whenever i can. Having said that, i don't celebrate Christmas, absolutely hated going to church or church-related activities that were about Christmas, and don't harbor any ill feelings toward friends who celebrate the Dickens out of Christmas. O, i was in a Christmas play several times to pass the time, but we won't talk about that anymore, K?

  3. Yes, our church celebrates it and teaches on it.

It is a cultural opportunity to share the gospel with those in and outside of Christ.

  4. Our church did a great series on the birth of Jesus. Not sure why anyone would not want to teach on the incarnation.

    Merry Christmas Kinney!
