Sundays (The Most Segregated Day of The Week)

Sunday at least in America is the most segregated day of the week. I remember living in Abilene passing by several churches and hear that church is the "black congregation". "Christians" choose to go to the church of their liking whether it is a particular denomination or even churches that are segregated by race. Is it okay to worship were we are most comfortable? What does that say about Christianity in America? Is your church diverse? Should churches be more diverse? How can churches become more diverse? Has your church overcome diversity? In what ways? How? What has your churched learned? What can the church learn in being more diverse with different faiths, races and socio-economic statis? Do think this is something that will get better or worse?

What do you think?

  1. I think this is something any religion faces. People like sticking to people who are similar to them. In my country, although mosques invite anyone in the mosque naturally starts to seem to 'belong' to the nationality that is more common around that area. Which is not supposed to happen and religion is meant to supersede any other barriers. To be frank, it might be because of the language the mosque uses, which isn't the case in America because I'm guessing all churches use English.

our congregation is about half black and half white. we have some jamaicans, ghanayans, and used to have some brazilians and philipinos.
one sister from ecuador now, a a few from the islands: trinidad, st vincent, etc.

the coolest part is, it's not a big deal for us. although outsiders notice it and appreciate it

    it's just who we are

  3. I have been a part of both kinds. I think that the neighborhood that the church is in plays a big part.

  4. You are seeing this more outside of the Bible Belt, but it is still a part of the church culture, sad.

  5. We are segregated in many ways other than race. We choose people who believe the same doctrine. We choose those who enjoy the same worship style. We even choose churches containing members who enjoy the same economic status. I think your title is correct, "Sundays (the most segregated day of the week) but not for all the reasons we think.

First of all I want to say fantastic blog! I had a quick
question that I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I've had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out there.
I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes
are usually lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin.

Any suggestions or hints? Thank you!
