There are some topics that are taboo to Christians and ministers to preach or address in church. I do think there is a time for everything to be discussed under heaven and that if God mentioned it to his people it should be addressed from time to time to 21st century believers as well. The taboo topic of incest was important enough for God to address to his people. God stressed that it was sin against Him and to those within the family unit as well (see Lev.18,19). The church in Corinth also had a situation between a mother and son that needed addressing. Do we wait to address the topic because of some believer who is caught in a forbidden relationship or do we discuss, teach, preach, educate, offer counseling if needed to believers?
Questions for discussion: Have you heard the topic of incest preached or discussed at church? Should it be? Why or why not? How should the church view taboo topics such as incest? What happens when we ignore something that God condemns in scripture? Is incest a problem that you see within churches in America as it was in Corinth? Should the church offer counseling to those who are victims of incest?

I would guess incest is not the problem today in the US, so much as the rampant occurrences of:

2. adultery
3. divorce
4. masturbation
5. birth control
6. abortion
I rarely hear any of those mentioned in a homily, and I would bet many Catholics would agree, sadly. When is the last time a Catholic read or heard Galatians 5:21 or Ephesians 5:5?
(Back before 1969, Catholics heard those two verses every year -- Eph 5:1-9 on the 3rd Sunday of Lent, and Gal 5:16-24 on the 14th Sunday after Pentecost. With the new 3-year Lectionary, Gal 5:21 is only heard one Sunday every THREE years and one weekday every TWO years, and Eph 5:5 is only heard one weekday every TWO years.)
When people lose a sense of sin, they lose a sense of needing a Savior. It's like the US is falling into the cycle found in the book of Judges. :(
The Catholic Church has suffered a hit over the past few decades, because people (theologians and priests and other people who have the duty of teaching and forming priests in seminaries) started accepting the ever-changing morality of the modern world over the standards established by God.
I'm sure many other Christian communities are facing the same problem.
While society's moral standards have greatly degraded, some things are still considered wrong by the overwhelming majority. Thankfully, incest is one of them. Furthermore, when preaching on such things (as mentioned by Jeff), you'd be generally preaching to the choir.
ReplyDeleteNow, if there is a specific case in the congregation that has been brought to your attention, the NT advises you to talk to the person privately. If the issue is not resolved, then bring one or two devout members of the church with you, and if THAT fails, only then should you bring it before the church. Where we used to attend, it was common practice for the pastor and his wife to prech sermons specifically aimed at certain individuals, usually without having first spoken to them about it. It was very frustrating, especially when we believed their position to not be entirely Biblical.
Many women (and some men) have been victims of incest. Usually it happened when they were children. Often it causes tremendous problems for the children when they become adults. Christians can be the kind of people who make the victims feel safe. We can comfort, encourage, and protect the victims (sometimes with the help of law enforcement and the courts). It would be good to let people know that churches will help them.
