Christianity is Christ. It is what he has accomplished for sinners. It is not about us, or others, it is about God and His glory.
ReplyDeleteWe have made it more difficult, way to technical. It is as simple as Jesus made it when he spoke. Most professing Christians (as opposed to possesing..)have much more expertise on how to be lost than how to be saved. If you believe what many teach there will be millions in hell who are out of God's favor on a technicality.

We are. We confine Christianity to the institutional church far too much. We are more concerned with what we do "at church" than about the poor, the widows and orphans, the alien amongst us.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if there's a single point of Christianity, unless you could say it's all about Jesus... His heart, teachings, priorities, etc. I definitely think on a wide scale we're over-educated and under-discipled.
ReplyDeleteI was just talking to a young black guy today whom I baptized last summer in Miami. He's trying to go to a Church in Texas where he lives, but he feels more discouraged by "going to Church" than staying at home. He's trying. But in his words he says it just seems like people "go just to go." It broke my heart hearing him talk about trying to live for God by himself.
I try to live in my own vacuum sometimes I guess, trying to be a disciple of Jesus and make disciples of Jesus. But the Church is in a big bind if you ask me... God is nothing more than a hobby or an intellectual agreement to way too many of us. It just hurts, you know?
To get back to your questions, I'm not sure if we've made it too simple or too complicated. Maybe some of both. We've majored on doctrine and minored on the foundations: loving God and loving people (according to Jesus). We should get the foundation before we start arguing about the details. Who cares what technicality we have right or wrong if we're not even passionate about God and living a life in pursuit of Him?
I guess I could go on for a while, so I'll stop now. But thanks for the questions bro.

I fear much of evangelical Christianity is missing the point. Jesus teaches us that rules have nothing to do with true righteousness yet it seems all the world ever hears from the evangelical community is condemnation. All the world knows is what we are against. Without love and the fruits of the Spirit we are missing the whole point of why Christ came. "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules." (Matthew 15:3-8)
